I never got on with electric shavers. I have had few over the years but none gave me close shave.

I do have a small travel electric shaver I usually take when touring for handiness but I don't really like using it that much and it really does need to be used daily as it just can't cope with two days growth.

Different makes have different cutting heads and that does make a difference. For camping I used a small foil head battery one but that really needed to be used morning and evening as that type of head only works on short bristles. I find a Remington suits me and gives a close enough shave.
Travelling around a lot on business I found the electric ones much less bother and a few hospital stays reinforced that opinion.

This is a "Real Man" shaving thread, so there should be no discussion of electric shavers, except to point out that they give a rubbish shave in comparison, and are somewhat effeminate.

In line with cyclechat equal opportunity policy, I feel that women should be allowed to contribute provided they are shaving their legs with a cut-throat or DE.

Opinions vary.

A question for those that use an alum block as well as moisturiser, how long do you wait between wiping over with the block and slapping the moisturiser on?

I know it might depend on how much time you've got available, before work in the morning and you might be a bit rushed, whilst if you've got all the time in the world and want to perfect the 1930s look like @Accy cyclist , then you can idle at leisure, especially as you've got to factor in waxing your moustache as well.

Mebbe I am too old or something but what is an alum block and how is it used?

I thought cut throat razors were supposed to be the risky ones, yet there is you using electric and still ending up in hospital a few times?
Tsk!

On my last hospital stay a couple of weeks ago the guy in the bed opposite could not shave himself. It took two nurses to shave him. They used disposable razors but I think he could have done it himself with an electric one.
My electric ones are battery powered so no problem there. :becool:

I've tried the foil and rotary variety.

I always found the foil type gave a good shave and were comfortable to use but like you say, they need to be used regularly. My stubble is like a wire brush.

The Philishave rotary type work much better on stubble but I find they irritate me and don't give a particularly close shave.

I use my electric when travelling just for the convenience aspect but at home, I definitely prefer to lather up.

I needed some shaving cream and used it as an opportunity to replace my cheapo DE that I've had for a few years, so I got an Edwin Jagger set including a 89L and sandalwood cream, it's a nice looking thing.

And as usual there's a little sample thrown in. 😊

Anyone using an open comb DE razor, if so how aggressive is the shave on your skin?

A little more aggressive than a closed comb, and a little more risk of nicking yourself. I have used both but have retired the open comb.

I've been using a cheap Kanzy closed comb razor from Amazon for 18 months & getting a good close shave. Recently I upgraded to a Merkur 34C, whilst I really like the weight feel of the Merkur (using same Derby blades as before) it doesn't shave quite as close. Thanks for your comment re the open comb, I wiil percivere with closed👍

Just trying Taylors of Old Bond Street Sandalwood shaving cream & it's superb stuff.

I use Edwin Jagger DE89.which is pretty similar to your merkur. The open comb shaved slightly closer, but you can achieve the same effect by doing an extra lather and pass with the closed comb.

Currently I always shave in the shower
People ask how I shave without a mirror but I have found that my face is pretty much in the same place as it has always been
so I'm kinda used to

In my 20s/30s I did have a routine of shaving with an electric shaver (I used rotary and foil with no real difference) for about a week
at athe end of about a week I started to get a rash
so I switched to a wet shave
which sorted the rash out - then after a few more days the wet shave started causing a rash
so I switched back

SOme time later I discovered that using shave foam/gel plus a basic Bic razor worked fine - no rash
but I generally got a nick for the first few days - after which it would last for several weeks with no problems - but it was best to avoid shaving one day a week

Some time later I ended up stuck at my Dad's house after he died - and had no razor
but I found a Gilette Fusion sample that had been sent through the post for some reason so I tried that

It has worked just fine for the last 12 years or so
any old shave foam or gel will do - soap at a push - but in the shower or bacth so my face has been subject to wetness and steam for a while beforehand
