I did end up switching to this full time, using a merkur 34c and a couple of other items that i came across, all i can say is what a great shave, i checked out youtube for the shaving video it was a godsend, hardly cut myself and it's been over 2 months now  all in all highly recommend people switching for a proper close and smart shave.

I switched about 6 months ago. Also went for the merkur 34c and it's been great. Shaving has become an occasion, and not a chore

I've got a Merkur but I find that I either just cut my face to ribbons (also have a styptic pencil) or I need to go back and get the missed bits with a Mach 3.

I've been using a DE razor for a year or two and I like it. No more shaving rash very few cuts.
I've just ordered some Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap after reading the the good reports of it on here.

takes a while to unlearn the bad habits from shaving with Gillette blades. best to shower first and then shave, as this softens the beard and makes for a smoother shave without cutting your face up. I bought 5 (assorted packs) blades, and have no clear winner yet. Will try the Derby range next. Also try and hold the Merkur gently - it doesn't require a lot of pressure to start cutting you

Spot on. You really do not need much pressure with DE razors. Especially if they are on the heavy side - Merkur 34C/38C. If you are applying the same pressure as you would with the Mach 3 then you are very likely to cut yourself. The heavy razors really need just the weight of the razor itself. Also, go with the direction of beard growth. At least for the first pass. The Mach 3 turbo is a great razor and will shave against the grain first time but that partly explains why they cost ten times as much as a DE razor blade. The DE will shave you just as close if not closer but the technique is different.

Looks like it's time for more practice. I only shave once a week at the mo and I must say the Merkur pulls less than the Mach 3,doesn't seem to get as close though

For face shaving - I've a few DE razors of which my main is a Mergress XL (a Mekur Progress with a steel end knob instead of the usual plastic knob).
I use a Fusion Proglide for shaving my head though as its just faster.

I think I need a longer handle on the Merkur. At least I didn't cut myself this time although I did have to go back and tidy a few bits later.

It might be the Merkur, I couldn't get on with mine at all, went back to my trusty Gillette Tech.

This week I'm away, can't take razor blades on a plane so I bought a pack of disposables from Aldi for 85p!

Holy thread resurrection Batman.

I got an Edwin Jagger DE89 for myself as a Christmas present. A nice heavy razor is a revelation after the cheap, cheerful and light Wilkinson Sword one I've been learning with.

I've ordered a Merkur 34c, a badger brush and some sandalwood shaving cream. It should all turn up today. This will be the first time I've used a proper razor as opposed to a Mach 3 jobbie. If you hear faint screaming it's me cutting my neck to shreds.
