Well obviously you can only open both gates by crossing and the sign does not instruct you to cross till after you have opened both gates.
..and so on. It's an impossible task.

I'd find another route; what did you do?

concentrate. The gates. Read the sign.

It says at the bottom, close gates, so it leaves them closed. What have I missed?

Barnet,
Fairly self explainitory I would of thought. Green lights on, open gates, check green lights still on, go across. Close gates behind you.

The blue line is the path taken by a car. The driver of the car followed the instructions but failed to put his handbrake on as he went back to close the gates. Car rolls down the slope and into the ditch ?

You tie a string on the first gate to pull it shut from the far side.

exactly. And, what's better you get to pull the string.......

It's a bit more complicated than that...
It assumes you're a human, so don't need the instruction "get out of your vehicle and use the wicket gates to cross and cross back" a couple of times.

It's a good thing Railtrack signwriters aren't computer programmers.

These gates are a pia.
I never have time to read all these notices and look out for trains and prefer to take the private road (not available on Google)parallel and immediately to the west of this road. Although gated for motor vehicles the alternative road had unfetterred cycle access last time I used it, but for a bottle of finest Glenmorangie I could do a recce to check the current status.

Edit..... Give me a week or two and I will report back on this.

How would you pull a gate shut from the opposite side when both gates open inwards?

Ach, google street view for pedestrians is always a bit wonky, wouldn't follow it to the ditch

y'see, Cycle Chatters. You see. That's what I call a service. Post a picture of a level crossing gate in an out of the way place, and, before you know it, Snorri is there with the recce'ing.

Sad to say, though, LonJoG is a strictly teetotal affair, Snorri, so the Glenmorangie is a no go.........
