Yes I was amazed when I looked at it initially and thought why not use p clips.

They are .

The back end is in tact and feels solid enough but it's just wrong and a waste of a nice frame.

the are nice frames, although that onehas been ruined. I used to have a via nirone with same carbon stays. It would have originally come with drop bars too. Still the wheels are OK! Groupset probably got changed with the bars as would originally come with a decent oen Ultegra or chorus s teh carbon stays was the "premium" model vs straight Alu frame.

I started about the same time and you’re right prices have really changed, ally framed older racing bikes are just not worth doing now as they’re worth so little. I mainly buy and sell Bromptons now as I’m tuned into the values and they always sell. The challenge is buying them for the right money.

Can't see the fascination with Bromptons and if I am selling them I need to be able to enjoy them first.

I was thinking last night when I started messing around with bikes about 15 years ago £50 bought you a fairly decent spec run of the mill steel bike but certainly nothing with tubing made by Reynolds etc etc and certainly nothing aluminium.
Now you can pick up a very lightly used alloy road bike for just over the £50 mark if you look hard enough. And for less than £50 you can find a very used alloy framed one which is still functional and looks tidy enough.

It was earlier than that for me, I first did up a Raleigh 'Mustang' about 25 yrs ago as a commuter/touring with a trailer rig then Maz's son in law moved into Army 'Officers quarters' (4 bed detached house on a base) and there was the remnants of a Ridgeback Hybrid in the garage that I built up into a nice bit of kit (Tange CrMo frame) I then built a few more up with mainly Deore/105 components getting a few frames from Cyclemagic including a lovely Raleigh Pursuit small frame I built up for my Nephew (it was pristine, not a scratch/scuff or damaged decal) General budget worked out at £400-£600 to build a bike to my spec but then I saw the 653 Time Trial frame and Simon at Cyclemagic said "I'll have to charge you for that one" (all the others had been freebies from the hundreds they had in the warehouse) I gulped a bit til he said "£50" now it had a Campagnolo seat post and headset which were worth more than that on the bay and I reckon that to build that frame would cost over a grand so built it up with mainly Centaur components and a Brooks Swift Titanium rail saddle with Roval wheels, spent over a grand building that one up.
Still it was a better 'mid life crisis' than sports cars and high maintenance blondes.

No ride this morning instead I went out to the garage to carry on the recommissioning of my Sinclair winter bike , which included fitting a new chain and adjusting the gears .

How many attempts at getting the right length.

Couldn't resist this Diamond Back Topenga when I saw it .
Needs a tidy up and a bottom bracket overhaul and then just a service by the looks of it or I might pinch the wheels for one of my Marins .
Love the bars and bright colours

Our tip has put the price up to £20 for a bike with a saddle, bars and wheels.

Lucky you!

That's what the tip here *used* to charge. But thanks to the covid-induced bike shortage, they put it up to between £50 and £80. And bikes are sitting there unsold.

That's a late eighties MTB which people nowadays call 'gravel bikes'. Could be worth a bit.

Don't think it's ever going to be worth much but I bought it because at worst it has a decent set of original wheels that can be used on one of my old Marin's. At best I shall give it a once over and use it as my winter bike.

Bit of a update the stem is now free to move.
The crank arms have released from the spindle nicely and the pedals have been removed so nothing too serious.
Hopefully the bottom bracket cups will be ok to move but time will tell, I will keep you posted.
What would be good was a converter for the cantilever / v brakes to allow 700 wheels or I suppose deep drop calipers
