Back on topic just been to Lidl, bananas yes, handwash - well on the special buys bit 99p tubes of the stuff, great for in car use after you have been shopping, also had packets of seeds amongst a variety of gardening items, no rice and soft drinks now seem to be the target as that was devestated but importantly plenty of single malts^_^
Well, as the person who started the thread, I hereby declare that this wasn't actually supposed to be a serious thread about panic buying***, so you are NOT back on topic!

(Still, I was finished with the thread weeks ago so feel free to take it where you will...)

*** I just wanted to post a photo of an amusing sign in a shop window!

Seeing we've not had traffic wardens for a few years, and the parking enforcement officers aren't currently on duty, have they still got the "No Traffic Wardens" sign in place?

I was mulling this all over yesterday, and decided that the shops could do more (i.e. rationing, basically), but WE the shopppers are 80% responsible for this.
The shops didn't start the rumours about loo-roll shortages (after it happened in AUS), which then became self-fulfilling.

This morning some more anecdata hardened my view; at Aldi they said they got a full delivery of flour yesterday, but as soon as peeps see it they buy 6 packs!

On the plus side, this isn't a major crisis - as posters have said, we aren't starving, and you can usually buy some product to wash your hair, or something to substitute for Marmite (why marmite shortages?!?)

They have been and many still are limiting some items (eg eggs).
Aldi could prevent people buying 6 bags of flour quite easily

Who did? I think we just don't know.

I'd accept that misbehaving customers are mostly to blame, but the supermarkets are standing by and taking the money as much as they think they can get away with, turning a crisis into shortages and extra profit.

People are selfish, who'd have thought it,

Local Co-op a few weeks ago had a little bit of flour in, guy gets to the counter with 2 bags of white flour & 1 bag of wholemeal

"Sorry Sir you can only have 2"
"But one is for my daughter"
"Unfortunately I can only let you have 2"
"But I am only having 2, they are 2 different items"
"I can only let you have 2 of any one type of food stuff"
"CENSORED" Still mumbling after he paid & was walking out of the door

I have no idea who he was but apologised to the cashier that she should have to put up with that, she said most people were being sensible.

It's quite hard to predict behaviour for some things.

The vast majority of items that people have panic bought in this crisis happen normally in much smaller surges that doesn't get reported. Some are 'slow lines' so when it's gone it's gone for a couple of days and then this becomes noticeable. Others are harder to stock up and that has a lot of bearing. Sometimes it rains and you get a surge, sometimes it rains and everyone stays away. Same with sunny weather. A lot of issues particularly around Fridays to Sundays.

In supermarkets some buying is done by local businesses who cannot be arsed to use wholesalers.

The there's the issue of vouchers and courtesies. Those who complain are often rewarded for complaining in supermarket settings. A wine and dine by the store manager or a £10 voucher. The serial complainers know that if someone threatens their jobs or to knock their block off then a lot of checkout staff will just put stuff through and even then a supervisors will shake their head and say put it through.

In pharmacy during the pandemic the regulator received a very large number of complaints about 'waiting' by the general public. This tells you all you need to know. To my surprise the regulator binned the complaints as frivolous.

I feel maybe the shops could do a bit of rationing, but are the staff paid enough to take the abuse and they will get it.

Not so sure about that. I bought a tins of soup in Aldi, it had big lump of plastic in it!.
I emailed them there reply "you are the only person to complain about plastic in soup " and "take it back with your receipt And you will get a refund "
As if I still had the tin?
Or could be bothered to do that?
Buying by business has nothing whatsoever to do with laziness, supermarkets are often cheaper for some items.
