Hallo everybody !! I have recently joined CC, it's nice to see so many committed cyclists. Restarted biking 6 months ago after 15 years of slothful living with the aim of losing weight and getting back to a decent level of fitness. Progress is varied - I lost 1.5 stone in the first 6 weeks but am sorta stuck now. My weekly mileage is about 35-50 dependant upon work and weather. I am now about to upgrade my Carrera Subway for a new road bike, thinking along the lines of a Specialized Secteur!? If anyone has any suggestions then feel free.

Cheers Steve

well done Steve thats a very good start.
The best advice I've received is from Mrs Peanut (Nutricianist and fitness instructer)
keep a food diary for a week . Write down every single thing that goes in your mouth (food or drink)Calculate the calorific value of everything you've eaten per day .
Then look to see where the hidden calories are that you are eating.

Decide on the total calories you can afford to eat and still lose some weight ie 1500 :biggrin:
Then construct a daily diet that doesn't exceed that figure.

For me I cut out my lunchtime chicken mayo sandwich (475 cals) and had an apple and cuppasoup instead (125cals)
Just that alone is worth 1750 calories a week or about half a pound.!

Its simple , you need to eat less than you burn and you will lose weight ;) says he who has just put on 3 lbs ;)

Hi everyone. I've just started cycling again 2 months ago after a couple of years break. Enjoying it a lot. I used to go on the old C+ forum and recognise a lot of names from there so I thought I'd register and maybe throw the odd post in.

how much is my bike worth?

Hello there!
Having thought mountain biking was for me I went out and bought a GTw avalanche 1.0 in april this year. However I've since decided that I prefer sticking to roads, cycle paths and now commute to work and school with my kids. My question to you guys is how much can I expect to get for this bike-its 6 months old and not been used much (I paid £595 for it). I would like to replace it with something thats a bit slicker on roads,paths-can you suggest a good women's hybrid ? What are trek like (as these are predominantely what my local bike shop sells)
Thanks for any advice,
Sophie

:hello:

Greetings, peeps
Mr__Green_Emoticon_Waving_by_DoggyArt.gif

I'm another recent returnee. I used to do a fair bit of road riding about a million years ago (in the 1980s) but marriage then brats then discovering bikes-with-motors moved me away.

Earlier this year, I went with my son (a.k.a. Small Norm) to get a new bike and ended up buying myself a Giant Talon MTB. I've been doing about 100 miles a month on it since, gradually getting hooked again, to the point of riding the 50 miles to Hampton Court and back a few weekends ago, and about 60 miles off-road last Friday. Most of my riding is relatively flat stuff, Thames tow path etc, although I get to Swinley Forest in Bracknell when possible.

Trouble is that I also love road work, and the Talon, as it is at the moment, isn't really best suited for that. I'm looking for a road bike around the same price range. Alternatively, I could get a set of road wheels and tyres as the Talon has a lock out on the front suspension.

I guess that's about me done. Great looking forums but geez, how busy are them! I'll have to quit work just to keep up with them! ;)

Its not quite my first post but I thought I should introduce myself...

I started my cycling career on a BMX, 20 something years ago and 'graduated' to mountain biking regularly. At university I started commuting by bike and have been cycle commuting regularly since - my current commute is 9.5 miles each way from Flixton to Levenshulme.

My bike history is; a red BMX that I can't remember the brand of - don't know what happened to that, an Emmelle mountain bike - still in parents garage!, a GT Tequesta - sold, a Trek 930 - stolen :-(, a Klein pulse - still using and a 2nd hand Bob Jackson steel framed road bike that is my regular commuting steed - frame is still original but all other parts have been replaced at least once...

Outside of cycling I trained in RF engineering but now run a small outsourced development company mainly doing software projects (lots of open-source stuff). I'm married and we have a 5 month old son.

Politically I'm socially liberal and economically quite left wing, and quite pro-European/world federalism.

That's me...
