Hi Everyone xx(

I've just started a new job, after being made redundant last year. No car ... and I'm a bit agoraphobic (don't like being crowded-in) - so rush hour public transport not exactly fun!

Wondered if I could cycle the 10k to work on my old, and little-used, tractor of a mountain bike (don't laugh, I'm not in such great shape, and definitely not a morning person xx() Glad to say there are showers on site and a place to lock the bike up, so felt I had no excuses.

Now I'm feeling better every day - and getting positively evangelical about cycling again. Hoping this sort of forum will help me maintain the enthusiasm through the winter months ... I live on my own, so sometimes motivation can be a bit tricky. Getting to know the other cyclists at work though - there's certainly a cameraderie about it, isn't there?

Cheers,

David

Hi everyone... xx(

This seems like a well-supported cycling forum with plenty of members so I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm 30-something years old (and an accomplished liar xx() always ridden cycles (hate cars) and currently riding a stock Giant Defy roadbike but considering upgrading/customising. I love cycling but years of smoking means I'm not as capable as I used to be

Anyhoo, looking forward to getting to know to you all...

Thanks, Scots lass - your welcome is appreciated :-)
Thought I'd have a peep at the board, before doing the ironing - anything to put it off!
Will soon be logging on properly, to get advice and (hopefully) support.

Be well,

David

Hello to all users,

A quick introduction :- Back in the saddle after a 30 year break, and everything seems to have changed so much. So I know very little about cycling and even less about bikes, so all I can tell you is that my bike is a black one.

Looking forward to posting loads of questions and listening to the more knowledgeable.

Hello from SW London!

Hello!

I signed up recently and wanted to say hello! I am in the process of rebuilding an old Raleigh bike and hope to get involved in some of the discussions on here. I used to build bikes as a kid, 20+ years ago, but for the last 10 years have been content with a Ridgeback mtb adapted slightly for road use. It looked as good as new, but was ridden well. Then it was stolen at the beginning of the year:sad:

Believe it or not, in some way having my bike nicked was a blessing. It was the impetus for me to get back into renovating and rebuilding bikes from old parts bought and scrounged from here and there (i.e. ebay and recycling sites). In the last three months I have renovated a relatively old Saracen mtb, which had been left in a friend's field for 4 years. I have stripped the frame back to bare aluminium, polished and cleaned every single individual part, and have bought a few new bits. It looks grand and rides like a new toy

Recently I aquired an early 80s Raleigh Courier, with a lovely SA 3 speed hub, which is my new pride and joy project! Indeed I have rekindled my affair with bike building, and I am now completely addicted!!

So, hello from me, an old kid whose first big modification was to put cow horns on a Raleigh 3 speed racer in the mid 70s, before getting a Diamond Back in 1982, and then a Muddy Fox Courier in 1985  And oh how I wish I still had all of them!!

How things have changed

Hello

I am new on here today.

I've recently started riding a road bike, in an effort to a) get fit an  spend some time with my hubby (although I do have to wonder why!!)

I'm currently using one of his bikes, a Giant, which frankly is a nightmare cos I've got little hands and the brakes are a tricky proposition with the hoods and all.

I really love cycling and today we went up Gun Hill to cheer on the ToB riders. I hasten to add we went up the route from the Rushton side although I still ended up getting off and walking at the very steep bit near the top with an old feller who was very nice to talk too! In fairness to the riders (mostly male) with their team kits and expensive bikes coming past, they were very encouraging, and not at all horrible like my husband who keeps saying things like"bike riders don't walk up hills" to me - he can be a real arse sometimes! Luckily after being married this long, I've learned to ignore him on most matters.

Anyway I will be getting my very own road bike for Crimbo and cannot wait. Not least for not having that feeling of sheer terror trying to brake going downhill and the wobbly front wheel, which he insists is "alright" for now, but I'm convinced he's bumped up the insurance on me.....

We are hoping to get a group of cyclists in the Holmes Chapel area for occasional outings as we have no cycle club here, so let me know if you are in this area and would be interested.

Look forward to speaking to you all on the forums.

So if anyone hears of one, pls tell me.

I'm disturbed by a proposal in Hackney in No 1 City to extend the 20mph traffic limit to the St Mark's conservation area in Dalston E8. I dare say most of us on this forum like the idea of such a limit in a residential area but though the consultation form gives space (not much) for comments, only a Yes or No is possible: you have to take the 20mph along with a lot of new humps, which despite the blurb's words, do not look cycle-friendly and which have been opposed by emergency agencies. Being unable to say No to the humps and Yes to the speed ban, I reluctantly had to say No to the proposal.
