After about a year of lurking I had to ask for some help over in Technical Know How, so here I am to say 'hi' too. Hi, from Perthshire.

Common enough story, I cycled a lot as a teenager on my 'racer' but did less and less over the years.
I started running in my early forties, after a few years of that thought I ought to mix it up with something else for the sake of my joints. So three years ago I bought a Merida CX bike on the cycle to work scheme, and rediscovered how much fun it is.
That hardly saw any off road use in two years, so I bought a CayoEvo last year - it's for fun and the CX has mudguards and rack fitted as the all-weather, shopping and commuting workhorse. (And it turns out to be handy to have a spare when the one needs a repair, as now.)

Hi bike fans.

Newbie here so taking the opportunity to say hello.

Live on the East Coast of Yorkshire England and the weather here has been cold and very windy for ages now, looking forward to some summer riding on a Colnago C50 that I'm building.
Look forward to meeting some of you.

hello All

Im 42 and trying to get into mountain biking without breaking anything or killing myself.

I am the proud owner of a handsome dog frame from around 1999/2000 which I have had from new and have built up myself over the last 2 years (I know its a long time) with lots of new components after I trashed it using it for commuting to work for 3 years. I now have a giant atx 830 that im rebuilding as my commuter bike.

I have been watching lots of mtb videos in qe park of youngsters going mad on the trails but I I know I wont be able to go that mad due to a) being 42 and b) self preservation.

I currently cycle an 8 mile round trip to work so im sure im fit enough to do the mtb stuff.

Hello to all...

This is my second post on the forum, I have kinda gone the wrong way round and what not. Anyway.

Screen name FelixStarsofsky, real name Oliver. I'm a Royal Marine Commando who has just come back to Afghanistan after 2 weeks R&R with my fiancee in Devon. I didn't leave without doing the typical guy thing and "P" the missis off my spending £330 of our wedding money on a nice shiny new Carrera Gryphon (with bling dics brakes haha) from Halfords. Despite my best efforts to convince her that it was a good move because I was saving £70 all she could manage was that terrifying look only a woman can give a guy that can put a guy well and truly back in his box. Now I am back in Afghanistan, she is probably spending a fortune on shoes and whatever else (some <--- keeping it P.C.) women like to spend thier money on.
I have not actually ridden the bike yet and I have to wait a few months until i leave here to do that, but the thought of it is pure morale! Halfords seems to get a bit of stick from what I have heard but the service i got was ok and although wee lad who initially served me was obviously on his first week of an after school part time job by the way he was causing havoc on the till, the guy who was running the show was very helpful and apart from not paying for the bike itself, could not have done more to help me. Hopefully the bike will not fall to bits on its maiden voyage to the local Co-op.
I intend to use it to commute to and from work whilst getting my daily phys cracked at the same time as well as hairing around on the roads between Taunton and Exeter. On my time off after Afghan, i was thinking about taking a week or so out to cycle from my mums up in Scotland to my home in Devon. I had thought about going the other way but I have it in my head that because I will be cycling south, it will be more downhill that up hill! Silly man I hear you mutter haha!
Well its dinner time over here so I'm away to have some delightful rice and peas. Yum.
Take care, Oliver
Welcome Marine,Screen name Hawkeye1 real name Mike, !am a Vietnam Vet,101st Airborne. Sorry to hear your back in the "Zone" Hey!! somebody's gotta do it right? you will really get a lot out of the bike when you get back. CLEARS THE HEAD AND CALMS THE SOUL Anyway if you ever need to chat give me a call,Iam on station most evenings. Brother in Arms, Hawkeye

Hello.

I get a lot of old bikes given to me, usually after they have been rusting away in the garden, or left in bits in the garage. Mostly, I'm after usable parts - particularly nuts, bolts, connectors, and I do have a penchant for Weinmann brakes.

Every now and then a gem appears. I was given a bicycle frame that had been badly repainted and left in the garden. There were no markings, but it felt very light, so I had it shotblasted. The frame was so damp that it immediately started to rust again (see photos) so I left it indoors for some months over the winter. However shotblasting revealed the Dawes logo, and a bit of research indicates a Dawes Super Galaxy c 1982.

I have now repainted it yellow, found a set of decals and rebuilt it.

Most of the parts used have been salvaged from other bikes. I don't like downtube changers, so I removed the lugs, allowing me to braze twin cable stops beneath and move the changers to the handlebars.

The handlebar came with the frame, but I had to replace the stem. Converting to centre pull Weinmanns was quite easy, the only problem being that the front fork stem is a bit short so I had to use a cable adjuster on a steel frame instead of a nice alloy one.

I looked at a lot of frames, but there are so many variants that I placed the decals where I thought they looked best in the end.

I have used Shimano front and rear derailleur adapted from an MTB, and they work well will non-SIS changers and a 3x9 combination. Chain length was a problem, and my usual method of measuring the chain across the two biggest cogs was a bit too long, but only by two links.

Bottom bracket was converted to cotterless, to allow use of an MTB crankset.

Apart from the brake, gear cables, and the gear changers, pretty well everything else was salvaged,

Hello everyone!

This is my first message on the forum, and in fact my first message on any forum ever!

I've joined the forum for just some help RE riding for weight loss.

Hopefully once I'm authorised to post fully I can get some advice and opinions.

Greg
