Hello all, just joined after reading as a guest for around a month.

I finally broke my internet forum duck after reading the thread on cycle clubs and its helped me get over my hangup on scared of being the guy out the back. I am going to join the local club and talk to a few of the guys around my standard and see where i go from there. I have tried Sky ride website but the local groups close to me never reply!! Has anyone had any good Skyride experiences or I am barking up the wrong tree??

Hey, I'm David

I'm currently in the military, I've been in Bahrain for 6 months, however now I'm back...... to cycle.

I've travelled lots, outside the military to America, Thailand, Ghana, New Zealand for the rugby world cup 2011 and Australia.

because of this I always have itchy feet and I intend on leaving the military in 2 years to travel around the world starting with a ferry journey to Amsterdam at the start of 2018.

Anyone wishing to help, advise, join.

please feel free to get in touch.

Long time lurker, first time poster (actually, that's a lie - this is my 2nd post as my first was in the commuting section a few moments ago).

I'm Danny, been commuting to work via bike and leisure cycling for 7 years, started on a BSO mountain bike, bought a Carrera Vanquish[1] in Feb '09 which served me faithfully until I moved to Derbyshire last September. It turns out that a bike with 23mm GP4000s and caliper brakes makes for some brown-trouser moments stopping (or failing to stop) at junctions at the bottom of the peak district hills in the wet. Faced with the choice of a) starting braking 1/2way down the hills to stop in time or b) buying another bike, I went for option b (n+1 and all that) and picked up a Charge Grater 2 purely because it has a wide-range cassette, disc brakes, and the ability to have full mudguards and studded tyres[2], plus was within my budget at the time. Come March I'll be looking for something similar, but with drop bars - forgot how much I hate flat bars!

[1] Yeah, I know, Boo!Halfords and all that. But with the exception of the handlebars coming loose when I rode it home (!) it actually held up pretty well for many thousands of miles with just the expected replacement parts needed (cassete, chain, brake pads, tyres) and no major mechanicals other than ones caused by me crashing it (gently) occasionally.

[2] Living on the south coast and cycling in urban areas with lots of traffic, I managed to cycle all year round on skinny slicks even in the ice and occasional light snow. Moving to Derbyshire however, ice+hills+twisty, low-trafficked rural roads convinced me to switch to studded tyres for winter.

Hello Everyone, I've been threatening to get a bike for a while and was lucky enough to get a Boardman bike from Santa. I'm a 43 yr old dad from Yorkshire and am looking forward to losing some weight. First job will be to get a helmet, but what after that ? What do I need ? Oh and this body ain't made for Lycra just yet so what are my other options...... so many questions !!!!
Welcome aboard from another Boardman owner. Mine's a Road Race, my first road bike after having had a town bike. The first thing I bought was a pair of padded shorts, absolutely essential.
Other stuff that I'm glad to have is a track pump to keep the tyre pressures up to 110 psi, spare tube and ******** repair kit. Less essential tackle I have now is cycling jerseys and jackets, clipless pedals and a Garmin Edge 200 to keep track of my cycling endeavours. Not really necessary, but add to the pleasure of riding for me. I hope somebody has advised you that cycling is highly addictive......

Hi All.

I am new here and hope one day to have a very well paid job seeking out and testing the best coffee and cake stops for cyclists. Where I will be my own boss, riding the latest company provided bikes and reporting in as and when I feel like it.

Until then, I am in training for my future career on an almost daily basis :-)

Hi all, new member here, Mireystock, from the Forest of Dean, Gloucs. I'm in my late 40's and re-started cycling last September. I'm absolutely loving it, and cycle most days, even if it's just 5 miles or so.. All those years without going on a bike- I intend to make up for it now ! Cheers.

Hi.

I'm from Brighton, Sussex. I'm over 40, weigh 18 stone and struggle up the slightest of gradients. However. I've just set myself a ridiculous challenge of climbing mont ventoux at the end of July, beginning of August this year. Hence joining this forum - for tips hopefully! The way I see it, I will push my bike up there if I have to as I'm now committed. But anything I can do between now and then to ensure I spend as much of the ascent on my bike the better. There. That's my introduction!

Hello all,
Im from Rochester kent, started cycling again 2 years ago as I was 16 stone and fed up. Im now 13 stone have completed the London 2 Brighton ride twice, have signed up again this year as its such a great event todo. Last year did my first sportive the surrey hills cyclone it nearly killed me (Epic) am going to do it again this year and try to beat my time. Most of my cycling is done as my commute to work, but I was presented with a Turbo trainer for xmas so am now trying to step it up a level.
Will appreciate any tips and hints and ask for your patience as I am likely to ask lots of stupid questions.
Many Thanks

Hi,

Just signed up, first time poster.

I'm Scott from Stirling, Central Scotland.

Started cycling (mostly road) around 2.5 years ago. Now commute a couple of times a week in the better weather and do the odd sportive.

Great forum, plenty of help and tips.

Cheers.

:hello: @meridamonkey and :welcome: to CycleChat ! :wahhey:

There are a growing band of us in CC Ecosse - we even have almost-our-own unique thread ! It might take some time to wade through it to get current but you'll get an idea of some of the 'main players' amongst us and we'd love to meet, ride :bicycle: and eat CAKE :hungry: with you !

Keep an eye on this section for our CC Ecosse rides and come and join us for a ride when we get organised ! ^_^

Hi there. Long standing (or lying down) member on another place, been lurking here for quite some time.

I run a small independent bike shop in Nth Manchester, specialising in repairs, refurbishment and custom builds.

Yes, I'm a shameless publicity seeker!
