Hello. I'm new, I love road cycling and mtb off roading. I currently cycle 15 miles a day 6/7 times weekly (commuter) but as the weather improves I enjoy going further and improving my fitness/speed. I enjoy sportives of 75-100miles. This year doing the London to Brighton off road which I'm pretty excited about! I'm not a technical rider just enjoy it, oh and I also have a horse, just in case anyone else does ;)

Hi everyone,

My name is Brian and I am from Ayr, Scotland.

I have joined the group hoping to find information, tips and advice about tour cycling. At the moment I have not sat on a bike in around ten years and would say my fitness levels are around average.

I have always wanted to get into tour cycling and to get out and see and camp in some of the more remote parts of the country. I have finally decided to do something about it and have set myself a challenge of cycling around Scotland (approx 600miles) to raise funds for a charity very close to my heart.

I aim to do this around August/September starting in my home town of Ayr, going up the Great Glen to Inverness and back through the Cairngorms and Trossachs taking around 7 days to complete the challenge.

I appreciate I have lots to learn and lots of hard work and training to do but that is what makes the challenge so appealling, as well as raising awareness and money for the charity.

The first and most important question I have is what type/model of bike would you suggest bearing in mind I intend to camp aswell?

Thanks in advance, Brian

Hi and :welcome: Brian. A big :welcome:to everyone else who has joined recently too.

600 miles + camping = touring bike to me. At the moment my money would probably go on a Genesis Tour de Fer.

However, not knowing what kind of budget you have, can I point you in the direction of Edinburgh Bicycle Co-Operative http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/browse/bicycles/touring-bikes who have a good range and whose own brand Revolution bikes are quite well specced for the money.

It would be worth asking the question in the "what bike" section of the forum too where you should get more replies.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your reply.

I thought a touring bike would be the best option and I 've had a look at the Genesis Tour De Fer and it looks ideal.

No doubt over the coming months i'll have to visit every forum as I have no cycling experience so I will be needing advice on various subjects. Choosing a bike was a good start though so thank you for your help.

So you've signed-up, got your user account, now all you need to do is get posting .... ah, um, er, What do I say?

Well, it's dead easy - just say Hello and tell us a little bit about yourself and whereabouts you're from (so we can invite you along to rides!!)

Believe me, once you get that first post under your belt you'll be off!

My name's Shaun by the way, and I own and operate CycleChat.

If you need any help or advice on using the forums, or want to ask a question but don't want to do it publicly - just send me a PM (private message).

Hope you enjoy, and welcome to CycleChat

Cheers,
Shaun
