Not sure if you get the same with road bikes , but many MTB shops I deal with will allow extended test rides at a cost with a reduction against the purchase price if you buy

I would always recomend try before you buy

I spent £35.00 at a cycle-re-cycle charity shop in Bradford.......it seems up to the job (MBK Orinico 12 speed Hybrid) The peice of kit that is most likely to let me down is ME. :bicycle:

I worry that I might not be cut out for cycling, when I read and hear of other peoples mileage (even on their first day out on the bike) I can just about manage 4 miles on the relative flat for my second foray out (first out was about 6 miles, hilly but with a few dismounts to push! It all seems a little disheartening and tad beyond me........guess I just gotta keep at it! Cheers for the welcome folks. I think I might start charting my weight, miles and speeds as an incentive, is this a good idea?

Dont worry about it, I used to think 5 miles was a big ride and now look on 10 miles as a short one.

Just ride as often as you can and increase the distance from time to time and you'll be amazed at where you can get to.

Don't worry - my first 6 weeks consisted of a 6 mile route with a hill, which I did twice a week until I didn't have to stop and push/have a breather. The first time I went out I walked the hill and stopped 5 times!

Hello
I am new to cycling and new to chat rooms. Name is John and I have not had a bike since i was a teenager. I spent my formative years glued to a racer (as they were called then) and, as with many people I guess, I passed my driving test and forgot all about bikes. I have just turned 42 and decided to stop smoking. I have smoked since I was 14 so was looking for something to improve my fitness. I decided to get a bike after buying my son his first one recently (I think it was the smell as I walked into my LBS. It took me back to a previous life).

Anyway, I bought I Cyclocross (Boardman CX Team) and I have been out on my first run yesterday. I did a route 50% road 50% real muddy forest track. I should have done the road section first. Peddling the road section looking like a mud monster caused a few odd looks from my more experienced brethren. Also i got some odd looks from people on MTB's when I was throwing, what appeared to be a road bike, around a forest. LOL.
