Odd that it was only 6 months ago when firms were crying out for well qualified staff, particularly engineers! Seems to have gone off a cliff-edge?
The current climate of inflation/probable recession isn't helping.

He's OK at the moment and enjoying volunteering three days a week at a local hospice's shop. They'll probably be looking after my mum in a few weeks so essentially he's paying assistance forward.

Financially he doesn't need to work full-time so isn't too bothered yet.

Agree, although it's treated as such. Having an autistic son, whose graduation I'm going to next week, has taught me it's a difference not a disability.

Depends on the Autism, but I see your point.

That's the thing we had a physics teacher who I got know well out of school doing lighting for school plays and stuff. He never set out to teach. He too was an engineer but graduated in a down turn. So become a teacher , sadly he could not hold a class together and was a target for class clowns.
The head of dept who was himself a genius always said to groups "you don't know how lucky you are to have him, he's way better than any of us." Which was true having known him and seen him at work he was extremely talented and a true genius.

I'm 4ft 11 - it's far easier to reach the bottom than the top

And in any case, how the blazes am I going to get a cherry picker into the middle of a wood?

Some don't even bother with that , ive seen some right clowns doing "tree work". It's with good reason why you need a different ticket to work up trees than the one I have for felling them from the round.

What astronomic delights did I cook for myself this evening ?
Well for starters I fancied a tin of chunky chicken on toast. I found a tin of Aldi Bramwells Chunky Chicken in White Sauce in our cupboard. Source of amusement more like !
I opened the tin to see chicken chunks floating in dish water! Perhaps it needed stirring ! All that did was to make the chunks become giddy and for the mess turn whitish! Ah! Thicken it with some cornflower. After a while of Stirling and heating it was ready to pour onto my toast . Oliver Twists gruel seemed more appealing . I sat down to eat my gormless meal. It was Orrible ! After a couple of mouthfuls the rest went into the dustbin.
What next?
I thought I would try Sainsbury's Spaghetti strands in tomato sauce on toast . These too were floating in a red liquid ! I cooked it and pored it onto my toast . I think that the toast was the only successful thing I cooked this evening !
If anyone wishes to go on a diet I can thoroughly recommend both items !

I saw somebody recently well up a tall tree with a chainsaw. No cherry picker. Seemed to have climbed up somehow with a waist belt and spikes on his feet I think. He did have a safety rope which he took up and attached before starting work.

They can be "fun" to use, and you end up walking odd on solid ground.
