Drivers may do it with petrol engined cars, but with them being quieter you may just not hear it.But as I've alluded to, I've only ever noticed diesel engine vehicle drivers doing this, never petrol engine vehicle drivers.
That's the puzzle and why I've asked the question.

Been over, in winter, when the power has been lost for a couple of days. Always aware there were others worse off. We at least could light a fire, and cook the dinner on the range.Back home again and to bed with hot water bottle and gas lamp. I bought the gas lamp years ago in case of a power cut, but never had the opportunity to use it. It's probably as bright as a 60 W bulb but poorly directed. I remember the phrase "gurgled like a gas lamp" from one of Dylan Thomas' short stories, and see what he meant, as it's quite noisy.

I disagree with anyone who thinks things were better in the good old days. Electric light and central heating were wonderful inventions.
