A long time spent abroad explains for me why wine has such a significant part to play in my life.
Even today a day without wine is a day without sunshine.
But I have managed going dry for Lent for a few seasons.
My real achievement would be the Everest of doing Advent dry.
Might make a post if I feel I can hack it.
I did used to drink in my teens and early 20s, but never that much. It was more that it was expected of me as my father's daughter - Polish culture is very alcohol-centric. If I'm perfectly honest though, I've never really cared for the taste, and when I learned to drive, I just simply fell out of the habit. I don't miss it.
What's also coloured my outlook is that both my late father and late uncle were very heavy drinkers, and my father, in particular, was a violent drunk. Both I and my mother ended up on the receiving end of his fists plenty enough times. And in the end, the combination of alcohol and cigarettes did for both men. It's first hand experience that's enough to put you off imbibing.
