One year stop gap until Antonelli steps up in '25?

Alo won't jump ship for a one year contract

It's a guess but I think Antonelli will go to Williams for two years before he gets a seat at Mercedes, this will allow them to offer a more acceptable contract to someone like Alonso.

I've yet to see any sign of leadership from Russell at either Williams or Mercedes. He's a great choice for number two though.

I would have thought they will want Antonelli settled before the regulation changes and why Ham only had until the end of 2025.

Lewis stepping straight up from GP2 to MCL worked and this kid is meant to be the next best thing.

Agreed. I don’t like this idea that Williams is a feeder team for Mercedes, McLaren or others. If this is the case then rookies are resigned to trying to stand out in a mediocre car and the team will struggle to elevate themselves without experienced drivers to help them.

I thought Russel carried himself well at Williams but Albon proves experience is what brought them the points/prizes.

Lewis was bank rolled by Ron Dennis. Not only did he race the lower formulae like folk today, he received driving tuition and a specifialist technical education that no driver before or since has ever enjoyed.

Max did it without that benefit, but still had the guidance of his own personal ex F1 pilot.

No one coming up at the moment is showing the signs of being a prodigy at the level of these two, be it either a manufactured or natural talent. Indeed, there's is no one else in F1 at their level.

For the short to medium term they'll be looking within F1 while they place their chips on Russell, and once that's sorted only then will they groom someone coming up to supplant the new arrival long term.

Thanks my two penneth.

Most of the teams have development academies now, which is why I don’t like the idea of the same old names being touted about when there is a pool to draw from. What’s the point of a feeder pool if you go running for Alonso or Vettel when the first opportunity arises?

I’m not a fan of Ocon but at least he’s paid his dues and done his time in the Mercedes junior driver program. But I fear that having two semi-experienced team mates (as it is with Ocon and Gasly) is not the best pairing.

They do have academies, but the immersive level of eduction Hamilton received was like nothing else.

Despite the academies and young driver programmes there's no immediate star on the horizon. They'll have little choice for the next 1-2 years but to use an existing driver. Can't help thinking Sainz might be a good placeholder - consistent, good with technical feedback, well behaved, and likely not too expensive considering he has otherwise little option.

Or I'll step in if Tanto would soften his cardigan stance.

I think you're disregarding the fact that Max has been groomed to be a racing driver since he was about 4 years old @Drago. If anything, that's a far more comprehensive education and bank-rolling than Lewis had.

It also explains why Max is so naive in some aspects of life in general.

I may have mentioned his very own personal F1 mentor

I wonder what excuse Lewis uses for some of his issues over the years?

This is very much kinda left field but who knows ? As Andretti have been refused entry to the" magic circle " and F1 powermongers wanting to keep USA interest high in F1, they might try and lever another American driver into F1 , maybe into Williams ? and move Albon into Merc . Pato O Ward would be good but unfortunately he's Mexican . " American drivers in the same team would create a stir in the USA

The raw talent was there long before Ron got involved. Watch some of his old cart races and it was like watching someone from a different class.
