It's random, the rules permit the cars to be scrutinised as they see fit, albeit theyre usually guided by certain indicators.

In the case of the planks an excess of sparks, or the distinctive aroma of a heavily abraded plank may be sufficient to attract further attention. Verstappen's was one of the other cars inspected but seemingly was OK.
It's standard for the first three cars to be checked over. Norris's car was clear, as was the Ferrari of Sainz.

I would nail some hob nails in that plank before they went out again !

Entertaining MotoGP from Thailand this morning, they were scrapping hard up and down the field, championships getting tight as well.

Hamilton is only 20 points behind Perez.
If Hamilton comes 2nd in the championship it would be an amazing result given the relative strength of the cars. He should be 5th at best.
Given how tight it is he may still finish 5th but he must be happy with where he is.

I think the DQ may have made his chance of 2nd almost impossible. It is mathematically possible and with Checo’s self-destruction apparently still in full swing there’s a chance, but for HAM to outscore PER by 7 points per race is a big ask, especially as RBR will swing their spotlight onto PER to try and ensure a WDC 1-2.

I'm just watching and from the first few laps it seems like Russell is kicking up a lot of dust at the back which I assume is bottoming out so I would have thought that would translate into wear yet they haven't measured his plank !

the "plank" originated a short while after Senna and Roland R demise in Imola , they are not made of wood , but synthetic material . Sennas car bottomed out so much after losing tyre pressure and heat following a painfully slow pace car for a few laps... and the bumps of Tamborello was not the place to bottom out. ironically Senna had warned Hill to beware of the Tamborello bumps .

One more error from Perez and it could mean his RB drive is gone , Mad Eye Mooney Marko would have him gone already but he is losing the plot himself with his recent looney outbursts and is an embarrassment to RB at this stage

it was great , J Martin on the pramac ducati applying fierce pressure to Paco Bagnaia on the works bike , it will be close at the end , tremendous skill from Brad binder on the ktm also . Moto GP is brilliant racing this year

It went a bit black over bill mothers half way though qually 3, the grids mixed up, they only made one run and those late out were affected by the weather.
