They had the advantage of a designer who had previous experience of ground effect cars, so they were already ahead of the field .

Correct, but your question was about the budget cap, Newey's brain was worth far more to them than any budget cap, it's almost like they knew the regulations long before anybody else did, bit like Brawn & the blown diffuser.

No, they just developed a far better car as a base point than all the others, not sure that the overspend of $300K - 2M (choose your number) had much to do with it

I think the very marginal overspend which was negligible, after the FIA accepted that a tax credit had been misapplied and that would have further reduced the headline figure, had minimal impact on last season's performance.

How they could cock-up the accounting in this way is astonishing.

A few missing wind tunnel sessions will not kill the team either.

I hope RB crush the rest of the field this season. And it would be great to see AM come in second.

RB will not be able to develop this years car as much as the competition due to constrains on development which should help to close the gap between them and Ferrari / AM .

Mercedes are out of this year if they have to change design philosophy with the results coming through next year. If they don't I think they will get some ok results by the end of the season but be further behind next year. Williams and McLaren know this story well.

As the rest of the teams are so close together that should give us a season of fantastic mid pack racing, if the tv shows it of course.

But the basic principles behind this are taught to first or second year (depending on the course) engineering undergraduates, so it's nothing new, really. I remember the smoke chamber demonstrations in Fluid Mechanics vividly...

Unless it's now a case of "what the hell are they teaching the youngsters these days?"

Same here. Plus I don't find Max and Red Bull at all likeable. I still think his first WDC should be voided.

Let's hope that the Red Bull isn't quite so dominant at every track or things will get dull fast.

Watch the rest of the pack because midfield should be brilliant this year.

I was never in favour of the cost cap. I felt and feel that along with the cut backs in testing (that have gone wayyyy too far IMHO) we have simply prevented development in season and pretty much locked in the status quo from day 1 of the first race. Were already seeing Merc writing off this season, development will be too expensive and too difficult. If only we could monetise or make more of testing, but of course with testing comes more costs as teams try new things. Im not suggesting a return to a second "test team" but maybe more running over a race weekend, or into the next week (i.e. after the race) with extra tyres and engines - or engine run time - say give each driver 50 hours engine time and 40 sets of any tyre for testing to be used at anyone of 10 circuits on a monday /tuesday?

I get the point and the aim of the cost cap, but F1 is the pinnacle, its a race, a race for the chequered flag, a race for the sponsors and a race for the money. IMHO were heading to a point where we might as well take all the income from all the teams and divided it up equally and give it back to them.

I was concerned that the penalty handed down to RBR last year wouldn't affect this years car, and it likely hasn't. I suppose the problem there is that it is too slow, the delay will allow mitigation of the effects of the penalty.

Ive never said Max didn't deserve to win, it was the way in which it was won. Given the tacit admission there was a messup with the way the race was run by race control, they should have voided the race - for everyone, or gone back 10 laps or something, anything but what they did.

RBR and Horner have gone from being the fun, slightly wacky, irreverent, youthful team to being arrogant but whiney, annoying and coming across as unpleasant and bitter.... Its not good look.

Do they also void the Spa result?

A bit like McLaren in the late 80s...
