Hmm. I am tempted to try this now, it's either this or a hilly 50 miler out to Longnor.

Hi Robert, Am I right in thinking you came along on a wheelers ride recently?

I think there are a few wheelers doing this ride too, leaving a bit later. I signed up to this one first though and if their pace is anything like the Blackpool run, I'm very glad I did ;)

Yeah Ed, was out on Sunday and also last night.

Pete was talking about the wheelers riding the 100, I was hesitant to commit since I haven't done 100 before (max I have done is about 70 mile I think) and the pace will be quite high, we averaged about 19mph last night I think, probably just over since we got 19 mile out in the 1st hour and we beat the hour back.

Ah cool. We must have met on the Wednesday ride up Mellor or the Saturday intro I ran then

You'll be fine for 100. I had only done a 60 miler before I did the Mcr-blackpool-Mcr and averaged 17mph over 125 miles on that - not in a group. I expect the Wheelers pace will be fairly high. If you are feeling strong then you could always sack us off and join them if they go past ;)

Nah, haven't met you before but I will probably see you on the next Brickworks/Bollington or Mellor ride if you go, you will easily recognise me, I'll be the one who drops off the back as soon as the road starts to point skyward, lol! Nearly got shot of the back last night because my lights were not good enough and I couldn't see the road ahead of me so was being very cautious round the bends and unlit roads then having to sprint back onto the group out of the bend. New lights for next week is the plan!

I did Mellor on Tuesday on my own for the 1st time, more challenging than I expected, went on from Mellor over Chunal and then did Mottram, was pretty goosed, even though I was taking an easy pace, lol.

Anyway, back on topic, I may be up for this forum ride, but I wont know for certain until Friday evening!

I think some people are overestimating the amount of effort required to push 20mph in a group. I did this ride last year mostly on my own and managed a moving average of 16mph, in a group that'd be easily over 20mph. There's just so much less wind resistance to deal with. And I weigh 17 stone so I'm no whippet.

+1 - My Mrs was averaging 13-14mph over 20 odd miles when we first got her the road bike. With just me towing her she did 16mph at the Great Manchester cycle without it feeling like a herculean effort for her.

Need to put a dropout disclaimer in because my back went pop this morning (when lifting up 2 milk bottles  ) - I'm hoping it's just aggravated by the cold weather this morn and will be fine for Sunday. I should have a better idea after the ride home this eve :cursing:
