To achieve an average of around 16-17mph we will need to spend quite a bit of time travelling at or above 20mph. Thats the way averages work, to make up for the slower sections where it is uphill or congested you will have to work harder when the road is clearer and level/downhill! from a mathematical point of view there are 3 definitions of average that I am aware of, the mean, the median and the mode. We are working to the mean and generaly this is the accepted form of average if you do not specify the other. Some people will say there typical average speed is xxmph if that is the speed they usually cruise along at (the mode) but that is an inflation of the truth and their mean speed would probably be a few mph less than they are suggesting.

Sorry for the boring stuff there, I just drifted off for a moment

No shoot Sherlock, Thanks for the maffs lesson, knew I should have spent more time at uni in lectures than playing cards.

As much as I love riding with you lot (not you skolly) I am going to regretfully pull out of this one too.
Like one or two comments previously I know I would struggle with this kind of pace for 100 miles, no matter how 'protected' I was in the pack

Fitness wise I have not really pushed on at all since May, if anything I am a little less fit than the last forum ride, must do bettter :headshake:

Have fun guys, I might pop along and wave you off, or back :hello:

Can I maintain this average ~ yes (mean mode and median )
Do I need to prove that fact to myself or anyone else come to think of it ~ No
Do I want to get up at 5am on a Sunday morning when it is probably raining ~ Not particularly:blush:

All the same was I looking forward to a sociable ride out ~ Yes:smooch:

But to be honest guys it is sounding more and more like a chain gang with a bit of willy waving thrown in, and I have to admit I have very little experience of riding in a group at such close quarters and the little I have done I didn't enjoy so I am going to pullout gracefully :hello: have a safe one and hope the :sun:

PS plenty of experience at willy waving though:whistle:

Flippin 'eck. Dropping like flies.

We don't intend it to be all out flat out, just a brisk pace - 6 hours ride time certainly isn't going too fast.

Come on Potsy - you've done the miles this year - you must be way up on my miles (tries his best salesman technique  ) - I've only done 1 ride over 40 miles this year, and that was Jodrell.

I like Skol

A Minging Manc...
Come back guys! Was it something I said?

Really Potsy and Oldfatfool, I know you can both do the distance and I know you are both much, much fitter this year so having ridden with you I am confident you can manage the pace. This isn't really willy waving or trying to prove anything to anybody, it's just trying something different, some variety and yes maybe a bit challenging but also achievable. The 6hr ride time is a target and we don't 'HAVE' to stick to it if someone can't quite keep the pace up. I am just trying to make people aware of the aims to prevent any dreamers who have never ridden more than 30 miles in 3hrs from turning up and getting the shock of their lives!

Edit: don't forget, this ride is near as damn it flat. It's not one of ColinJ's rides!

I'm afraid I must fess up-I don't want to be out for 12 hours plus with a load of blokes in lycra-hence why a rough time guide was inserted as I know that some forum rides can average lass than 10mph. I don't really care whether it takes us 5 or 7 hours, but not 12.

Look-no-one is forced to ride with us or not. I reckon there will be 5000 people doing the 100m or 100km. If you want to ride slower or faster then do it.

Potsy - you did a 70 mile ride last weekend at an average of 15mph and as far as I could tell did it pretty comfortably. You only had me (and my mate at times) as a wind break (albeit he is a rather big wind break  ).

Its not the ride time Skolly, I did a shade over 6 hours on Smokeys blackpool run, and the return 50 mile was solo in rain in around 2hr 35mins without a stop. (Told you I could willy wave ) Like I said though I ain't a club rider and don't feel safe or confident riding 3" off of someones wheel nor having someone 3" off of my wheel.

Sure I wouldn't get lost etc if I just sat at the back but that would hardly be fair and I would hate to have David waiting around for me at the end as he was providing the transport. No doubt I will catch up with you guys another time:cheers:

I appreciate the comments, but I know deep down I would struggle with this. Have ummed and arred for a few weeks about it now, Saturdays ride was about my current limit tbh, 15 mph and 70 miles, any more or any faster and I'm done for.
Remember when you upped the pace a little through Winsford 400bhp? I was quickly going backwards and that was only 17-18mph.

I really enjoy the sociable forum rides as you know, I just don't see this as one of them.
My own fault really, was so close this year to making a real dent in my weight and fitness, then let it slide over the last couple of months.

I quite like the 10mph ones
