Well I suppose if you're going to DNF an audax for mechanical reasons, you might as well do it properly.

I think that might be rather terminal

Bit of duct tape :okay:, if its steel it might be fixed by someone with a welder.
Never a good time for that to happen and hope you are not stranded in the middle of nowhere.

I'm not now, though Eskdalemuir at 5:30 on a Saturday evening was not exactly easy for transport.

Glad you're home safe.
Did you get a fright? Did the failure happen suddenly you think?
This is a bit scary, my favorite commuter is a very old steel frame, was my ice bike as well for the last 2 winters, all the salt of the roads!
I do inspect it regularly though.

I think it went going over a cattle grid. I worked out something was wrong when I went to pedal up a hill and the chain was surging when I pushed the right pedal down. I looked to see if anything was jammed in the chain and realised the bike was in two bits. Had to walk/scoot about 4 miles to the control, and the rear tyre looks a bit damaged from rubbing on the guard.

To be honest the bike is over 25 years old, and I don't know much about how it's been used as I bought it off a mate for £25 a few years back and he'd got it from an auction. I've been having problems keeping the wheel straight in that dropout, which was probably the crack flexing the dropout but I didn't see it.

Eekk! Mine is the same, frame came from a recycle a bike place.
I thought steel was unbreakable!
Shame you couldn't finish the audax, but good that it did not happen on a fast downhill.
Poor wee bike, it deserves to be made a garden planter or similar in its retirement.

I could yet have it repaired. The thing about steel is not so much that it's unbreakable, but that it's relatively easily repairable if it does break. It would need a full respray after welding a new dropout in though so it's whether the bike is worth it.

For now I've got other bikes I can use, so I can wait and have a think about replacing it.

That's one old bike

Terrible time for it to happen :banghead:

Older than I thought actually. There's a guy on Retrobike who had an indentical frame, and it's a 1984! 31 years old then

As it was before the weekend.

Gaffer tape and cable ties and it will ride again. Maybe put some lollipop sticks in for splints
… or an empty coke tin for extra strength :training:, then you could finish the audax and maybe even be mentioned in the same breath as McNasty. :notworthy: :notworthy:

25 years bike ownership, cost £25 … good deal ! :wahhey:

Having a really lazy week, not been out on the bike this week

Heading down to Moffat this weekend to do some exploring, sadly not on a bike though
Not sure you're missing much between two days of thick fog followed by rain today. I eventually get a bit stir crazy being cooped up and have to go out for a while. Was a tad damp and puddly this morning. Only problem is, I am now stuffing my face with chocolate and crisps! Didn't cycle far enough to justify that. Lol
