When I was in ant RTA/RTC what I did first was jettison from my bike to the road via the bonnet of a stationary car. Then what I did was sort of writhe around a bit closely followed by shouting some swear words at anybody I could see who looked remotely like they'd been driving the car that hit me. By about the third person I was shouting at the culprit. Then I just writhed about a bit more trying to catch my breath because of the abdominal pain I was in. Then I lay there answering questions put to me by various emergency personnel like a paramedic and a police officer.
What I suggest anyone else do is once hit by a car to leap gazelle like into an energy absorbing forward roll and come to a neat and dignified stop on ones feet followed by a stern reproach to the driver along the lines of "I say have a care old bean you bally nearly did for me then, wot."

For example? Note that a collision doesn't have to be between vehicles, for example a car hitting a lamppost.

Err, when that land rover pulled across me a few years ago if I had fallen off, caused by the land rover I guess that would have been a collision with the floor?

Almost went up the pavement with that little trick.

A colleague was hit by a vehicle, the female driver got out and a passer by said "You'd better call an ambulance!"

Her reply?

"It's only a cyclist!"

I think it is worth taking some photographs as well. Most of us carry a phone capable of taking a few snaps.

As the title implies if you are in a RTC what do you do?

1:What details do you need and what can you ask for?
2:What to not say?
3:Will pointing blaim affect the outcome?
4: Do you talk about the incident?
5: Do you report it to the police?
6:At what point do you call the police?
7:For what reasons can you call the police if a RTC occurred?
8:At what point do you call an ambulance?
9:Should you use insurance even if they say they will pay with cash in hand?

1. The name and address of the registered keeper of the car, and the name and address of the driver at the time. If you are injured you can also ask for insurance details.
2. 'Sorry', 'My fault' or a variation of the same is advice from civil solicitors. 'You %#%%ing ##%#' is also best avoided.
3. Not really.
4. The first rule about the incident is you don't talk about the incident. Just kidding - you can, but there's little benefit if it becomes an argument.
5. If there's an injury or if you suspect drink drive or no insurance.
6. At the scene is best. Depending on the level of the incident, we may or may not turn out to the scene. Use 101 if there's no emergency, 999 if there is,
7. As per q.5
8. Head injury or back injury of any level. Limb injury is up to you, but personally I'd call if the injury was going to stop me continuing my journey.
9. That's entirely up to you. If they offer this, I'd suggest having the conversation over email in case later, when they find out not all bikes are 50 quid from Tesco they retract and deny ever offering this.

The police do not have to attend every RTC. Our rules are that we SHOULD attend any injury RTC reported to us, but it can and often is limited by resources.

Can you ask for ID to confirm their identity... if they dont do you call the police or just leave it?

You can ask sure - but you have no 'power' to insist if they refuse to provide ID to you. The police do have this power, so that's another reason to call us if you start thinking they are giving false details.

Oh and one final tip - check their tax disc subtly. No tax is normally a clear sign of no insurance - check for no disc, an old disc, and if you can, that the right reg is on it.

I had a little bump in the summer. The guy was okay and I got his details just incase there was any damage. There wasnt any but it was good practice taking details.
However, he didnt want my insurance details. I felt a bit guilty not giving them to him but if he doesnt want them then it isnt my fault is it?

I could understand his explanation for hitting me. There was a car behind him turning into the side road and he was moving forward a little to give it room. He just didnt realise that I hadnt moved.
