Not as many pairs as when I used to run regularly. If there was a model that I liked and they were on sale I'd buy a few pairs. So there was always a few boxes under the bed.
In Yvon Chouinard's wonderful book on mountaineering "climbing ice" he says that if you find a good pair of (climbing) boots, buy several pairs, as you'll likely not find the same quality or design when they come up for replacement.
Admittedly I might have taken this slightly too far for some of my Crockett and Jones shoes purchases, but in part this was because Loakes stopped making my favourite brogues. I'd previously had 3 pairs, both black and tan leather, but when I needed yet another they'd stopped making that style
