"Helmet's do look rubbish.
That's why I don't wear one"
Have you ever seen a serious head injury - they don,t look very cool either.
Show me a helmet that will reduce serious head injuries and I may wear it, but there aren't any. The standards that cycle helmets are now made to are now lower than they were 20 years ago. Name another 'safety' product where the standards have got worse over the years.

Fire extinguisher colour coding was changed from 100% of the bottle being the correct colour to only 10% (rest being red) as the EU was trying to harmonise between good practice in places like the UK and Germany and bad practice elsewhere. I'd say that this made them less safe, although I admit the functioning of the equipment stayed the same.

To me the efficacy of the helmet isn't the question it's the risk of head injury. For my cycling the risk is not that different to other day to day activities I do without a helmet so I don't wear one.

"You write something in comprehensible English and I'll bother reading it."

you give me ONE reason for NOT wearing a helmet that doesn,t make you sound like a moron and I will read that.

instead of hiding behind - oh you english is poor , or - your so stupid.
So the reasons I gave for my personal choice make me sound like a moron? Above in post #200?

I would suggest my posting shows I have put quite a lot of thought into whether I personally choose to wear a helmet or not; that I have looked at evidence - of all sorts, from very solid to very weak. Same is true for several other contributors.

So a simple question for you - which of the two sound like .................................................... ooops, I'd rather not go there.

Not really - it's more like pointing out a very, very large hole, into which somebody dutifully jumps, and promptly starts digging themselves deeper.
From some of the replies I was starting to suspect that there was some over shoulder assistance & there was more than one shovel digging the hole.

ok , reading through all the posts its come down to this - as I see it.
Reasons for wearing a helmet
A) You believe a helmet will mitagate an injury. - won,t necesserily save your life but it might help
B) the roads are unsafe enough to regard it as a real risk
C) It seams a common sense solution to personel protection
D) its socially irresponsible to do something you regard as risky and not try and reduce the risk.
E) a helmet looks better than a bald head and a sweat band.-helmets look the part
F) The patrion Saint of Cycling , Saint Wiggins said we must , the evil saint of cycling ex-saint armstrong said - take the pills you won't feel a thing. -

Reasons for not wearing a helmet
1) Don,t believe helmets are effective enough to warrant thier use
2) Don,t look cool, like the feeling of the wind through my silky flowing locks - or something similar
3) don't want to , can't make me , knob off big nose.
4)Don,t think the risk is worth it. - it won,t happen to me. the odds say so.
5)have a convincing excuse (or reason not to), studies prove, long term trends, %, ect ad infintum
6) when your time is up , your time up . - helmet, flak jacket, armoued underwear , ain't going to save you from the reaper.

reasons for not reading this post
- can,t read Urdu, - it is in urdu isn't it? - you call that english ? Paah !
He is so stupid.

No - what it comes down to is you believe in wearing a helmet (as do I) - but many people choose not to - and until there is conclusive proof that it is clearly beneficial to do so they will continue to exercise their absolute right not to do so....unless of course the law is changed and they are compelled to do so.
One of the reasons why people on this forum are so vehement in their responses to pro helmet entries is that they have a genuine fear that at some stage wearing a helmet will be made compulsory despite there not being any good evidence that it would be beneficial - and in spite of much evidence that it would be detrimental.

....and this is why people have shown annoyance at your unwillingness to accept the validity of their responses to you.

Your postings are clearly not written in Urdu .......but your English does kind of suck!;)

So you only walk around 2-3 days a week (involving working with heavy machinery), or 4-5 days a week you don't wear a helmet when walking around. Why not?
well people look at me funny if I wear my helmet in the office, they sort of look at me then at the ceiling
and its one with a peak , its a real bugger in bed. - ones got to take a risk sometime

Quite, and we see Nottingham MPs are going to lobby on this very issue:

Yet more resources that CTC and other cycling groups will need to divert to fight this.
