It was a bird counting day today, had an early start and in view of the poor weather forecast I decided to take my 'phone with me. Weather wasn't bad at all, on return home emptied my pockets to find that instead of my 'phone I had lifted the remote control for radio/cd player:rolleyes:.

Reports of flooding at Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd coming in from folk that live out that way. A friend's son has just moved into one of the new houses by the river in Sowerby, so I hope he's ok.
I have just a call from someone in Hebden Bridge. She said the town centre is completely under water. I saw Mytholmroyd on the news just now - it has been trashed again. They were only just starting to recover from the awful Boxing Day floods of 2015!

Blue sky here now.. wind has been light for 2 hours but picking up again now. Next 40mph supposed to be coming in shortly.
Same here. I went out and did a quick tour of Todmorden town centre. The A646 HAS flooded in a few places here but so far I think we have generally had a VERY near miss though shops opposite the new Lidl look like they will be flooded.

I just checked the river level and we hit the record level earlier but the rain stopped just in time to avert disaster. Levels have now dropped a lot.

This bridge normally has about a 2 metre drop to the river Calder. You can see that if the level had risen just a little further then the water would have started backing up and flooded even more of the streets upstream.

Many houses in the flood zones have cellars equipped with pumps which are now busy pumping LOTS of water out.

This gravel got washed down onto the road in a couple of minutes by a surge of water off the hillside...

Not so lucky...

I'm really lucky to be just out of range of all of this!

Glad you're OK Colin - I saw the thing on Mytholmroyd and was going to get in touch,

Whalley in Lancs flooded again.

And in Preston a swimming cyclist (one of us?) rescued by boat.

I know that riverside route- was along there late last year on a jaunt back from St Annes.

Rain never seemed to arrive much in south london, bit blowy.
Plenty here further west, torrential around 4

A 'number of' flood warnings... love the understatement.
Not too bad here at all, heavy burst of rain, wind sounds worse that it is. Fence--only damage so far is a post that broke 2 or 3 years ago and has been held up with garden wire and a small stake in the garden had the stake pulled out. A few bashes with a hammer in the morning should sort that. Unless the wind gets up again overnight. I'm not going to look at the forecast - nowt I can do anyway.

Thanks, yes - I am only about 2 metres higher than the A646 but that means that the entire valley bottom would have to flood by an extra 2 metres to reach me, which would require an absolutely devastating storm. The bigger danger to me is flood water coming down the hill towards me. Fortunately, the torrent I saw was favouring the far side of the road so most of it didn't end up in my cellar.

Whalley in Lancs flooded again
Yes, I saw that on the news too.

It must be terrible owning a property in any of the areas repeatedly affected. They either won't get flood insurance or it will be incredibly expensive.

Some people in Mytholmroyd took 18+ months to get back into their homes last time and 5 years later it has happened again. Millions of pounds have been spent on new flood defences there but they haven't been completed yet, and what they have done so far hasn't saved the town.

Todmorden has a scheme to divert flood water from the Calder into a flood storage system in the park. I couldn't get to the park today because the road was flooded, but it looked to me like it was clear. Either someone had forgotten to open the sluices again, or the floodwaters were coming down the hillside AFTER the park. The cricket ground next to the park WAS flooded and this is what was happening across the road, which supports my hypothesis!

(The Calder comes towards the camera between the park on the left and the main road. The hillside in question is up to the right and appears to be dumping vast amounts of water down West Street.)

Good morning. The storm has reached us: all local trains are cancelled until 0800, many regional trains are not running because of trees on the line, and the entire intercity network is closed for the day. The Schools have said parents can decide if they send their kids in or not and I've just told the boys to stay in bed.

95 km/h winds are forecast; we'll see what daylight brings...

Wow, suddenly in the last 2 minutes all hooleys broke loose. We went from a bit blustery with rain to chucking it down and wind blowing in all directions.

It's still no worse than I've seen before, last year there was so much rain the drain at the bottom of the road made a 2m high fountain, but it's getting worse...

If it's what swept over here last night, then apart from an almighty deluge, not much. According to the local weather station data it reached a maximum of Force 6 and gust's to 86kph. Lot's of branches and debris about, but no major damage or problems.

It's pouring down now, but calmed down to force 4. Some schools have been shut, but other authorities are keeping theirs open. All trains are running fine at the moment, though I've been given a bonus day off by my work.
