Ooh, after some research... it seems that IT MAY NOT BE A ROMAN ROAD AFTER ALL!
I wondered about those grooved cobblestones when I walked down there years ago.
That’s the clue thst led me there as I remember when walking the Pennine way that Wainwright called it a Roman road in his books. It’s marked Roman road one end and Packhorse other end on latest OS mapping. The other clue was cars going right to left perpendicular to direction of photo. Which meant this road was heading up to a t junction.
