FNRttC Friday Night Ride to the Coast York to Cleethorpes 18th June 2010

I have a problem. I have a multiplicity of cakes baked for this trip. They will not fit in my specially-purchased minimalist rack pack unless I unveil the secret hidden expansion possibilities - but as I am very probably the slowest person on the ride by some margin, I would thoroughly deserve severe frowning at were I to turn up with an extra half a stone of cake in my bags (although I have lost a good half a stone of lard since signing up for this :becool:).

Anybody got space for a cake?

You'll have plenty of helpers Crinkly - it's a 'Dundeed'. Personally, myself, I - I never touch the stuff - spoils my racing line.

which you would get. I'm going to search that bike for cake, and confiscate the lot.

Apologies if I have missed it, but how are people who are returning to York planning to get back there?

Danny, I'm grappling with this problem myself. I need to get back to York reasonably promptly, but at this stage there don't appear to be any train tickets available leaving Cleethorpes much before mid-day. (Recent posts seem to contradict this; I'll look into it some more).

I have considered taking my van over there during the day on Friday, getting a train back to York, doing the ride (obviously) then driving back on Saturday. If I did this, I'd be able to carry one or two passengers and one or two bikes besides mine. I think Origamist expressed an interest in this. If you're interested too, it starts to look like a worthwhile plan.

I'm cycling up from Sheffield Friday morning. Setting off at about 9:30 ish.

I'll be cycling back.

Hulver, that's about 170 miles. Great if someone else is doing it so I have company but have you got a plan for places to stop off and stuff?

As my bike is still out of action (missed the postie with my spare parts this morning!! ) I may well end up cycling to York, but I'll be looking to do it in under 3 hours without a stop to catch up on missed training this week. Practically bouncing off the walls from a lack of riding !

I've done York in 3hrs, I'm not sure it'll ever be repeated though. Your best route is straight through Rotherham A630, Conisbrough, Doncaster and then straight up the A19.

I've got a route from Sheffield to York with a cafe stop. It's the one the Sheffield CTC used to use when they were riding to the York cycle show. I can send you a gpx route if you'd like to see it. If you want to join me we'd have to arrange a meeting point, I'm setting off from Mosborough and won't be going into the city centre.

I'm setting off fairly early on Friday morning (9-9:30 ish) so that I can get to my parents house (copmanthorpe) and have a nap in the afternoon before the FNRttC. As you might remember, I'm not the fastest rider. The route is fairly flat after about 25 miles though.

As to the ride back from Cleethorpes, I was going to reverse the route and hope that some of the stops on the way down would still be open. If I'm on my own I'm hoping it's a nice day, and a kip in a field wouldn't be out of the question. Riding with other people is enough of a boost to keep me awake though.

I've got all day, and I'm not in any rush. Although I would like to have a look around the Cycle Show on Saturday.

I'm not setting off back to Sheffield until Sunday, or even Monday depending how knackered I am.

I'm looking forward to it.

That's a little bit fast paced for me ;)

LOL I don't expect you to ride back as well Hulver, that'd be about 220, 240 miles, something like that! I don't mind a long ride, I've done 100 solo, I just wouldn't mind some company even if it's only for 10 miles, from anybody same with iLB if he wants to ride to Doncaster and then point him over the right bridge in the city centre or to the far side of Rotherham. I also have no idea what the pace will be, it's been 9mph on my commutes this year.

You can certainly send me the gpx if you like.
