FNRttC Friday Night Ride to the Coast in aid of Martlets Hospice 3rd September 2010

Where's Rich? We are supposed to be marshalling Reigate Gulch for a few hours...I've never had a cross word with him, and although we are one down we should get two across to make it easy for others who don't have a clue. We'll act as guardians and telegraph problems down the line. With the odd anagram 'thrown in for good measure' (6) ---nac
It will be lovely to see you again Al, if you can tear yourself away from 'Duke' Bollo "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people except Alastair, and I require the same from them."

Ooooo get him!

Well, just read the whole thread and, barring saving me from going to HPC, have learned nowt, jeez you lot don't half post some garbage...what do you think this is, some sort of forum?

So, I'll probably meet Bollo on the train and have close to an hour fending him off before escape into the London streets. Where he'll promptly lead me to Sloane Square, coz he's a nice guy. But what then, is it regular night ride stuff with regulars sharing the waymarking and teccing? Or, due to size, are these further subdivided with multiple tec groups etc? I wasn't planning on bombing to Brighton, I probably couldn't anyway, so slow and steady appeals.

I just hadn't paid attention to this as I thought it was at the end of September, the htread title cuts off before the date on my general screen

People that are marshalls, after they have done their bit are they all riding to the coast as well?
Do you think I am going to stand around in some suburban oasis, guiding people around for three hours+, fending off brers, chavs and other interested parties just to ride up a big hill and go to a seaside dump in time for lunch...

...you're dead right I am Lee
Friday Night business isn't complete until at least, The Arrival - au bord de la mer.

damn, too straightforward a question, you know you won't get a straight answer...I read the whole of this thread to try and work out what was happening...that's a few minutes of my life I'll never see again

I would have thought with a mass start it would be like any other ride (except a lot more people of course) and then each marshall rides ahead, takes up their own wayfinding position as the Peleton arrives on mass. Waits for the TEC's to roll through and then joins back up with the rest of the group. Not standing around at a junction for a few hours.

see that's the problem right there, independent thought, the same would have seen me tooling my way up to HPC and probably ending up at Southend wondering where everyone was.

what you say makes sense to me...but I will wait and see I think

You could go to HPC Lee - the action starts downtown at Sloane Square though  I just had a chat with Al and a fear that gripped me while cycling to work this morning was that the sheer volume of bikes is an open invitation for a typical London, blatant theft. Seventy bikes in the central 'island' of HPC is more or less manageable - nigh on 400 at the thoroughfare of a busy part of town is a different proposition.
Lee, on patrol with a shotgun is an ideal deterrent!

Yes to the other bit about advancing to position...

So I presume you have to wait for the those on the 'normal' night ride and then wait around for those doing the sportive.

If the two vans though that Simon mentions earlier in the thread (the mechanics vans) are staying with the main pack. Then how do you know when the last rider comes through who is riding the sportive? Because effectively you have two rides going on...
The 'faster' riders head off and have the basic circuit with added loops - self-supporting. The main group of riders set off and the vans will trail them all the way - it worked very well last time. Also there are two cycle mechanics travelling behind for any 'rough stuff' that might be needed, so the TEC deployments are not the 'normal' ones.
Meanwhile, the faster riders drift through Surrey and beyond, always ahead, but with sufficient additional loopage to provoke appetite, while the hard-core fundraisers trundle towards a cup of tea and fabulous refreshments. As the last rider passes by the marshalling points, the marshalls can then join the back of the group, the middle, the front, have a chat, some fun, whatever I guess - as a normal night ride unfolds...remembering that there are probably a lot of enthusiastic first-timers who will need their spirits kept flying high...they are going to feel so good.

As a Marshall at Coldean Road - right at the end - I was planning on meeting everyone at the end in Brighton.

I've been injured and off the bike for over a year until recently.

I was a comitted roadie for nearly 20 years until a Hull resident decided to trash my bike for no reason while it was chained to some railings.

When I recovered - I bought a blinging MTB. Although I've got a separate set of wheels with slick tyres, it's very slow, and MTBing is not really my thing. I love the thrill of the open road.

I was planning on marshalling and riding to the end and meeting people I've met virtually through here.

I then realised I couldn't and the latest is, I'll have to drive there and probably drive straight home after the last bods pass, due to work commitments.

So anyone who I may know on-line, please stop at Coldean and say hello - you'll be nearly there anyway and over the Beacon with a frothing pint uppermost in your minds.

I'll have to probably drive home after the last riders, but I need a cycling goal.

I have had fitness probs which I am over (I hope) and I want to ride a FNRTTC - probably next year. I need a decent bike as well to buy - so any advice/friendly waves on Saturday am would be greatly appreciated.

Especially from the P&L crew where I occasionally sniff around and loiter quite a bit in a shifty way (and have done since joining cycling+ in about 2004)

yes, at our own (vay slow) speed. and then riding home again.

You're part of the vibe mangaman. There really is no need to be so kind as to have frothing pints of beer ready for all your friends on CC, who will be purely cycling focussed...(You obviously read too much post-ride scandalous claptrap! )
I have four complete sets of paper maps - just in case - so there really cannot be any excuse for passing you by. A big poster marked 'Mangaman Corner' would be cool!
Looking further, many of us on here are keen to give the FNRttC a legg up, and you could borrow a bike for a trial run at moonlit conviviality, I'm sure. If you're about 6ft+/- a bit and about 100kg +/- - I could get you up and running, or rolling.
See you Saturday.
