Fiesta size replacement EV.

Nissan with the Micra and Ford with the Fiesta missed an opportunity to make EVs

BYD with their strong company will crush the small end of the market.

And with the EV only sales after 2030 being pushed back to 2035 Ford are going to be in big trouble with no small family size petrol variant.

Ford Fiesta STs keep getting stolen round my way ? Think that’s 4 in the last month or so that I’m aware off?

Anyway digressing , they axed the Fiesta based on governments stance on the move to EVs by 2030. Is it Not something to do with emissions across their fleet ?

Edit . It would be appear that was not the only reason , people just don’t want a small car . SUVs rule the roost! Even small ones !

EV's cost a large chunk above their petrol/diesel equivalents - typically 10-15K. On smaller cars that's often too large a jump for consumers. I think the market for a small car costing 50% more is much smaller than a large/premium car costing 25% more.

We are very glad to have our 12 year Old Ford Ka, bought from new, and this will be our last car purchase on this planet because of our age.

It's madness, and a total mystery to me. We have a Skoda Citigo and it's great precisely because it's small.

Need to tax large vehicles much more - they have an awful impact on everyone and everything around them.

Government has announced those with licenses post 1997 can now drive upto 4.2t vehicles without any extra training.

They acknowledged the extra weight of EV vans

My neighbour recently bought a hybrid car. He'd decided against an EV because apparently, the cost and trouble of installing a 'three phase charger' ( his words ) at home was too expensive.

You can get 3 phase chargers and for those you will need the power to your house upgrading which costs between £3k and £6k. The thing is, that you only need to do that if you want to be able to fast charge - i.e. fill your car up in an hour or three. Most of us with EVs just use our normal single phase supply because frankly we aren't driving between midnight and 6am or thereabouts. Most cars will refill most of their capacity within 6 to 9 hours on a single phase 7kw charger.

If I'm down to about 30% and put the car on charge at 10pm it's usually fully charged or close to it on the low cost intelligent tariff by 7am the next day. Fast charging is for long trips when you need to recharge during the journey. Or if you are an Uber driver I suppose.

Parts of Bournemouth had a 2 phase supply that used 2 x 240 volts to give a 480 volts. It was a sort of compromise between single phase and running a 3 phase supply 😮

Our Laundromat in Soutbourne, Bournemouth had single phase electric but when we put the new washing machines in we upgraded to 3 phase 3 x 240 volt which was just outside our shop in Southbourne Grove circa 1969.

A bit off topic but re the discussion about Ford stopping production of the Fiesta. While the looming ban on ICE cars will have some bearing, its also (according to an article I read some time ago) that after the chip shortage hit car production worldwide, car makers realised there was money to be made by rationalising production (less supply, more demand, more profit) and they also realised the cheaper ends of the market made less money...so stop producing cars that don't generate much profit.

Interesting. As he's retired and she works from home and as far as I'm aware, they don't travel any particular distance, wonder why he thought that a three phase charger would be needed.
Fancy sales pitch or ignorance due to lack of research on his part I wonder - ?

You honestly don't miss it
I drive more than one car and we're all slaves to muscle memory, so I very much dislike one car having differences to the other one. I honestly would be annoyed by one having the speedo in a weird place.

Thinking of my last 3 cars, the satnav screen has been difficult to view when exposed to direct sunshine. This problem doesn't affect instruments recessed in the binnacle.

Remind me, what is the benefit of removing the entire binnacle and relocating everything elsewhere? I don't get it.

Take a Y for a test drive is the easiest way to see if you can get on with it.
Oh I've no doubt a Tesla Y would be an utter delight to drive, far exceeding the experience in my 15 plate ICE car.

But the price is wrong. I don't value the aspirational qualities of a Tesla, have no interest in bling, am not yet interested in any degree of self-driving technology. A car is just a tool to me, and I want the fundamentals of transport to be delivered competantly; the price should reflect that, not anything else.

I'm not even interested in a used Tesla, thanks to various other concerns. I buy cars for the long-term so am more discerning than lessees about longevity, reliability and build quality.

But market sector is likely the most important thing to me.
How else can I put it ? I favour a Pixel over an iphone, Prosecco over Champagne, Mid-range over high-end. Savings over debt. Sensible over bling.

VW is more my brand for a car but I don't know what their EVs are like. Am curious to know why you recommend Teslas so much when you drive an ID4 (or have you changed car?). Does the ID4 have shortcomings?
