The Greedy Map
Lets use the data from the fuel crisis to plot a greedy map of England.
Those areas where there are the greatest queues, fights, fisticuffs, anger etc we colour red and those areas that are sailing through it we colour green and we have a map of England that shows the greediest and less greedy areas of the fair country.
Here in South Yorkshire we would be Green, and Humberside and most of the North West and the South East, possibly London, Essex etc red.
The Greedy Map.

Random sample of three fuel staions (the only ones I passed today) - all completely out of fuel. Two of them (Tesco & BP in Martlesham) were also out on Monday when I went out for a ride. For a country with a supposed shortage of available fuel, there was a lot of traffic on the roads today - allbeit a bit down on normal.

I have a trip to Cambridge next Thursday - 140 miles with an indicated 200 mile range left shown on the trip computer so I should be OK. To help the MPG there's plenty of HGVs on the A14 to slipstream. After that, there's nothing I need the car for until the 24th and, with any luck, things might be back to normal by then.
Slipstreaming is an excellent idea as is reducing the weight of the vehicle. Any stuff cluttering up the boot? You could go “ full on “ and take the rear seats out 😉

Sainsbury's here had run out of fuel yesterday . They had fuel the day before so it seems like it had gone in a day !
I had a think . All of the town's filling stations are all located near to the A350 M4 corridor, the main route from the South Coast to the M4. This route hasn't been helped by Bath declaring a pollution free zone. All HGV's are being diverted from Bath on to other routes, including this way .
My town now doesn't have any filling stations on the East side , so people have to come over to this side for fuel . I think Calne , a town near here only has three filling stations . I think Corsham has two and Melksham has 3, we have 6.

There is no such place.

If you mean the area covering East Yorkshire, North and North East Lincolnshire, there are no queues or shortages. South Yorkshire is a bit of a fiction too, as there are only three ridings in Yorkshire, East, West and North. Beyond a fiction by Winifred Holtby, the South bit was added to take account of places Derbyshire didn't want. :okay:

Don’t diss the Peoples Republic.

I was wondering whether the problem is timing.
The desperate people are the ones who work - the want to be sure that they have enough fuel to get to and from work for the next few days.
Hence they feel safer if the top up every day at the moment rather than filling up properly maybe once a week.

As a result, if my theory is correct, there will be a rush of people from maybe 5:30 - 6:30 of people wanting fuel - then of they can;t get it they may well go out again later in the evening to try again.

This would provide an ongoing opportunity for 'the end of the world is here' photos in the late afternoons for journalists. EVen if the pumps have been quiet all day before that.

That would also produce a localised problem in the highly populated areas - thus creating the 'greed map' mentioned above

Now all I need is access to the private confidential data from the petrol companies. If it shows this time distribution and also a move from larger fill ups to much smaller ones then I will be correct.
ANyone got access to that data???

OK - justa theory - like evolution:eek:

Nah, you need to plot actual consumption. Some areas have sailed through only because they are closer to refineries and have hogged supply, causing shortages elsewhere.

I can't remember the details, but I do recall during a previous (actual) fuel shortage, that argument didn't stand up when people around here commented on our proximity to the refineries.

The blockades? Yeah, proximity would not have helped then. This crisis is different.

Perhaps, although I see no evidence for it. The shortage coincide with panic buyers. We're not close to the source of products for supermarkets, but there are no real empty shelves here either.

Also, whatever the situation I was thinking of, the argument against proximity would still apply, I just can't recall the full details.

I've just been out . There are a lot of vehicles driving around and I have seen queueing up at one filling station that I passed . I don't know how the other places are.
I think the problem here is that there is a high demand for fuel from people using the A350 and from people from neighbouring towns .
