Was there no ride lead car
Caveat: the last tri I did was (ahem) in the 90s, so I may be uninformed as to current practices...

I don't lead car makes any sense in a triathlon. The group is very spread out, so the car would likely only be leading just one rider, and would probably done little to alleviate this situation - or a similar one where a rider unknowingly joins the route of a triathlon. The lead car would be long past, but there will be slow swimmers trying to make up time in the cycle and run.

Signage and proper briefings - no excuse. It's not like thy can't afford the cost of a laminator....

Really? I've not seen anyone doubting it.
Have you read the whole thread? there appear to be some who think it's acceptable to barrel around a blind corner that didn't exist, attack a horse & rider, to then not stop & apologise, or ask if they were alright, give a one fingered salute to the victim (correct choice or word). But it's okay as they were either racers or triathlons/letes not sure if they are the same or different

Well I read the first 9 pages, and didn't see anything like you describe. Could you perhaps quote the posts you are referring to?

Who said it's acceptable?

My selective quote was intended to address the comments made by some people in the thread about how this incident will fuel anti-cyclist sentiment. It seems the horse rider herself doesn't take such a jaundiced view and some of the responses she has received even show cyclists in a hearteningly positive light.

Then @dave r posted the whole statement, which is fair enough because it adds some more context, and @Katherine posted it again including the additional bit added to the statement later. All good. Nothing for anyone to apologise for.

No doubt the rider will make further statements in due course.

I thought the whole statement needed posting rather than quotes from it as it showed the horse rider's views on the incident.

Wasn't she remarkably calm in what she posted online, and in her subsequent edits? One of the things that I found a bit grim about all the commenting is that having had an utterly pants day, she's then gone viral and now has all that hate, vitriol and othering on her FB feed; that seems a bit rough when she clearly draws the distinction between the individuals whose godawful behaviour put her and her horse at risk and cyclists as a group. And there are some commenters blaming her on there now, in various ways. I just hope that the many supportive comments are the ones that 'stick' for her.

This was big news at work amongst the motoring fraternity. Not surprised we are hated so much with the poor behaviour displayed out there.

Thought the first two passes were ok but the third was too close and the ones on the left were appalling.

Good to see that nobody supported the cyclists.

I cannot imagine how they would try and talk themselves out of that one. I think there may be an offence of wanton and dangerous cycling. Or am I talking rubbish?

@Racing roadkill I think you are misinterpreting her statement.
She said that she had been out on that road earlier and had not seen any event signs.
She had not seen any cyclists earlier.
She said that she would not have used that road if she had known there was going to be an event.
No horse rider would deliberately endanger their horse, themselves or other road users.
