Cycling Workouts: Discussion/Encouragement/Sharing/Banter

Day 2 of me doing my workout at lunchtime
to hopefully improve sleeping at night and it seemed to go ok. I had an under over session today. The first two blocks were about where I would like them cadence wise (although maybe I could still go higher), the last block was a wee bit low. Although the first block of cadence was assisted by the Suito in ERG dropping the resistance target in the last over for some reason and I had to spin at a higher cadence to get back on target

After a dull and short commute, I decided I’d do last nights skipped workout Bess on the same bike. I was probably too steady as the vast majority of it was on unlit Fen roads which are in a poor state of repair! But I think its supposed to be a recovery ride so I wasn’t stressing :okay:

A few workouts in the sun (and warmth) of south west Tenerife.
1. 4 x 5mins VO2max up to Arona
2. 30 minute threshold effort up the 20 switchbacks of Taucho - beating my PB from last year when I had also gone all in.
3. 3off Z3/4/5 pyramids again up beyond Arona and Escalona. Cold on the way back down despite a vest, jersey and gilet.
Workouts interspersed by rest days or easy hour spin. I’ve another 4 days bike rental so another 2 workouts in the plan.

I really could do with improving my descending but I get the jitters on the switchbacks. Need to borrow Tibhaut’s coach as he had the same troubles 😂

Looks like you're having a great time and improving at the same time.

Your times up Taucho smash mine, but sounds like I might beat you on the downhills

Roy gave me a cadence workout yesterday. These are great on the turbo in erg mode as you just focus on the cadence.

I had to do 6 x 3 minutes at threshold at 50 RPM. TPV is good for these as it shows you your torque on-screen so I can see how I am improving (or not). It was only a 60 TSS workout but I felt quite weary in the evening and my glutes were aching this morning, like after a weights session. I

Also had 4 sets of 30 seconds at 135 RPM afterwards which were good as I need to up my cadence in sprints.

Yes I wondered about it when I first saw it but I actually quite enjoyed them - they were only at Tempo power.

I remember trainer road wanted max sprint efforts for 10 secs. My peak was around 175rpm. I don't think I could do that these days- I may try one day

Hi Al Dont know if you have ever climbed up to Teide via Chio and Mirador. Its a lovely climb great views. Looks great your trip

Thanks Andy. I haven’t cycled that route but did drive up it on Thursday from Chio. Looked great for cycling. I’m unsure if I’ll have the opportunity for a long spin for the remainder of the holiday but certainly one for the future.

It takes a lot of confidence to nail the corners. I had it sussed when I was in Mallorca last year but it’s gone again. Thankfully I’m not a premium subscriber to Strava anymore so I cant see how far down the leaderboard I am 😅

You couldn't be any worse of a descenders than me a year ago, and I have got 10x worse 🙄

The first workout of the year in the ‘Hall of Pain’ in my house (my previous w’outs were in my parent’s garage) and I don’t think I got it all out and as a result I got a struggle survey
:frowning:
On reflection though for the 2min VO2 Max intervals I was ahead of where I was at this time last year and at the start of 23 it was only surpassed slightly by an outdoors power meter ride.

Also I stayed in the VO2max zone, not quite 125% and anaerobic but in the VO2max zone :-/
