Only people with absolutely no understanding of them at all.

The handset makes no difference whatsoever, it is the card(s) you have associated with it that matters.

When Apple Pay first came out a few years back, I was in a pub paying for a pint with my phone. Group of older blokes at bar "that's not safe is that, it's risky and not secure and that"
Me: "tell you what, you give me your wallet and I give you my phone, see who can buy a pint with it"

I had literally just spent the last year on different projects analysing the security of Apple Pay (I worked in a penetration testing team in a very large bank). I hate ignorance

Surely the work just shifts about. Instead of employing cashiers in local branches, they employ people to staff telephones, maintain websites and whatever else it takes to run remote banking.
No, it’ll be redundancy, the call centres will be fully staffed, it’s a money saving plan, increased profits are all the bosses care about, as well as a big fat bonus.

"Putting people out of work" is a weak argument

Were that the issue, we would all be too busy making horseshoes, lighting the whale oil lamps and hand scything the fields to worry about cash

Like it or not, we are in a rapid transition to a cashless society and you can either get onboard or not but as time goes on cash, cheques etc will become more and more difficult to transact with. It is inexorable.

Post offices will fill the need for the diminishing numbers of people who can't or won't go cashless. But the true costs of these cash transactions will be passed onto the consumer. Handling cash is an expensive business with the person conducting the transaction, the insurance, the banking of cash, the security risk etc

Btw, my heart sinks if someone gives me a cheque. The real cost of my time to take it to a bank and deposit it is ridiculous. Real time tf via app pls!!
It is very rare for us to be proffered a cheque these days and on the last couple of occasions we have refused. Complete PITA.

We've been on Google Pay for a while now and really want to get rid of our debit cards from our flappy phone cases but...

... It doesn't work on 2 of the dozen or so self checkout machines at our local Morrisons and we forget which ones. Ditto the machine at one of the local pubs we use.

The have a few quid in notes on you is a good idea though. Will discuss it at our next domestic financial review. 😁

Started using a Revolut card abroad a couple of years ago. Brilliant. No need to carry worryingly large wads of cash and - more to the point - not losing out when getting pounds changed into euros and back again. However, only worked on about 80% of motorway toll stations and occasional failures elsewhere so still need to carry cash. Heading off in a couple of weeks and we're split between 25% cash, 75% plastic.

I can pay cheques in via my bank’s app (not that anyone gives me cheques apart from my elderly parents )

My mate works for the bank on the payment systems. Keep using them or he will be out of a job !

And branch closures have been going on for years already.

I discovered you can pay in cheques via a post office. At least you can with HSBC.

My view also.

A real example. When my dad moved into the village in the 1930's and opened as a Cobbler, there were 7 Mills and 5 Cobblers - he was the last Cobbler to close in the mid 70's - there were no mills left.

Time moves on, things change. Occupations disappear.
