Funny you should say that about Honda using oil. We had a CRV 1.5 TDI, that started to use oil. I wasn't happy about this , believing modern cars should not burn any oil. I sold it early over concerns of 1litre per 1000 mile Honda said was normal

Not just Honda. I bought a new ice Skoda Karoq last year after owning a couple of Hondas, a Fiat and seven VAG cars, diesel and petrol, over the past thirty years and for the first time in that period have twice had to top up the oil levels between services. I did mention this to the dealers but they said it was perfectly normal, as has also been said on a Skoda owners forum I belong to.

In nearly 50 years of driving, I never owned a car that burned oil as a matter of course. Even my Astra which reputedly did according to general opinion...didn't.

I had a Golf GTD brand new in 2015 and sold it earlier this year, it was driven with respect and servicing was done as per manufacturers recommended intervals in fact over the last few years it was probably serviced every 7000 miles. However with 125000 miles on the clock it was burning a litre every 1000 miles.

My first car…..I swapped a perfectly good Suzuki GSX250 for it. Madness.
Drank almost as much oil as petrol 🤦‍♂️
Brakes that worked, until they got moist 😜
Windows that disappeared when you wound them down, never to return 🫣
Wheel arches that were held together by rust. Until they weren’t 🙄
Got stuck in 3rd gear, made for an interesting drive home 👀
& then caught fire, ‘cos of a wierd looped fuel line under the bonnet 😱

God I loved that car 🤣

Modern cars should not burn oil. The manufacturers use thinner piston rings to reduce drag improve efficiency. That's great, it passes the legislative requirements to sell said engine in new cars

But it passes the massive headache onto the customer with oil burning issues several years down the line, emissions problems with ever tightening MOT requirements.

Customers spend hundreds if not thousands trying to pass MOTs because manufacturers are building engines with chocolate parts

My metro burnt a lot of oil in its last couple of years. It got to the point I stopped bothering to change the oil as it changed itself ! One trip to the Alps, I bought a new gallon of oil ready to take with me, and poured the last of it in at the ferry terminal at Dover, which is quite a high consumption from Cheltenham. I discovered that in France they didn't seem to have the cheap supermarket oil I'd been using, after all it was only in the car for a few days, but they only sold decent quality expensive oil. Anyhow got to alps and back, plus another year or two of driving afterwards

Work van has gone from using no oil, to roughly 1 litre every 4-5000 miles, not bad in the grand scheme of things, but things like monkey metal piston rings explain a lot , but it is quite high mileage

I owned a 1977 911 Carrera 3.0 many years ago which had a very unhealthy thirst for oil, it had only done 70,000 miles but was diagnosed with worn valve guides, I ended up having them done, the bill was only £6000 :hyper:

Very nice car though and despite the eye watering running costs, I still miss it.

Very nice car though and despite the eye watering running costs, I still miss it.

I just doxxed your old car. It's MOT ran out yesterday. Had only done about 85k, generally doing around 100-200 miles a year.

Funnily enough, 1980s, a colleague had one. It was indeed very unreliable and the highlight was Eddie, the owner, driving it to Glasgow from Peterborough.
If I remember the story correctly, it broke down and or a warning light came on as he got very close to his family home in Glasgow. He opened the bonnet to find the crankshaft pulley had dropped off. Incredibly luckily, the pulley AND its retaining bolt were sat on a crossmember and it turned out to be an easy fix.

Eddie was one of those guys who only ever brought virtually scrap cars...and invariably paid the price. He was constantly running out of fuel in a VW Beetle he had, it was so old it was a 6volt version. We never knew if it was because the tank leaked...or he just hated putting petrol in them

Never a dull moment with Ed. 😀
