Definitely a case of just because you can, doesn't mean you should

At least it was the high output version.

Bloody ugly front end though

I'm sure I'm not alone in noticing the huge increase in parts costs since 2019....... I'm trying to get Ferodo front discs and pads for my Daughter's car and finding the discs are £42 each - 4 years ago the exact same ones for my Wife's car were £20 each! Wow. it will be close on £129 for discs/pads that were £72 in 2019 - but I want Ferodos, not an unknown brand (It's the only thing stopping the car, along with the tyres :stop:)

Every time ours goes in for a service I know the wheels have been off as I receive a video of the car on the ramp, sans wheels, the mechanic goes through a quick explanation of condition of pads & discs along with condition of pipes/flexible hoses, measurements of wear on discs and pads with vernier calipers and tread depth of all four tyres.

Mercedes? I get that with mine.

While I generally agree I'll take any reputably branded pads and disks.

Some of the worst brakes I ever had were ferodo budgets, but I've not seen them for about 20 years. Turned out they do, or did, a "budget range" and a "premium range" for a few quid more.

I'm quite lucky to have a branch of Brakes International near by, they usually do decent stuff at a sensible price - at the counter at least.

The Honda main stealer does that too.
Did stop them telling me the missus needed £1700 worth or pads disks and calipers
Actually needed disk on back and pads all around. £120.

Reading arohnd the forums, as is my wint, Ferodo pads and discs seem to be getting a bit of a bad rep for squealing.

I go for OE every time. You know they'll fit, any anti chatter shims will be xorrect and present, and they'll stop as well or better than anything else. My life is worth more than a modest saving.

It was at one point always worth checking the prices of service items at the main stealers parts counter.
There was a time when Ford was the cheapest supplier of 5-30s, and filters by some margin. It was also worth checking other dealers for common parts. I remember getting a pickup hose and some injector seal washers from the Peugoet dealer for my Focus significantly cheaper than Ford could offer.

That said I havent had a sensible price for a while. I was upset to be quoted £40 for four plain wheelnuts for Hyundpie. (not lost because they was greased - but to replace the locking nuts _before_ i lose the key)

I always call Volvo first, about 1 in 3 times the genuine item undercuts the pattern item. Not onky that but our local volvo dealer has a service arrangement for older cars and repairs there using guaranteed genuine parts are often cheaper than Fred in a Shed.

The Ferodo ones are lister as OE for the vehicle.

That does not mean that Ferodo branded pattern parts sold on the aftermarket are the same as the ones they may have manufactured as OE equipment. They're often not even manufactured in the same country as OE.

Bosch do that. So do Lockheed - their OE gear is European or US in manufacture, their aftermarket stuff to fit exactly the same cars is made in India.

If it doesn't have you cars brand name of the box and didn't come from a dealer or authorised reseller it is almost certainly not from the same manufacturing source.

Posted in DIY, maybe we need a car detailing tips (can apply to bikes too). My car hasn't been used much, and despite regularly being cleaned (washing the dust and cob webs off), the roof, boot and rear are feeling gritty from iron deposits in the air. The bonnet wasn't so bad as it's sheltered by the garage from prevailing winds.

Before tackling it with a decent polish and loads of elbow grease, I came across Autoglym Magma Liquid Clay. By heck it works well. Cleaned two cars, both looked spotless. Sprayed this stuff on (enough for two cars) and within minutes mine had gone a streaky purple, roof and boot were bright purple, the rest not so bad, but streaks and spots all over. Sprayed MrsF's car and again streaky, although not as bad.

Let it soak, then washed it over with a sponge before rinsing it all off. As it comes off all you can smell is 'iron'. It definitely does the job, and I'd say worth that £5 per treatment - not something you need to do often though (first time on both cars).

Paintwork is now spot free and smooth !

Kit car went for it's IVA on Wednesday, if only failed on the handbrake needed to be 18% it came in at 16.8%, but the effort on the rear brakes was low on one side, enough but low, looked at getting the callipers sent off & refurbished, Big Red want £150 or I could get a pair from Febi for £100 including pads which seemed a good deal, don't like replacing brakes on a side by side basis, always do an axle.

Ordered them Wednesday afternoon & they duly arrived Friday, went to fit them today only to find although they are both marked as Febi they have come from different manufacturing companies, they are stamped up differently as in the casting numbers, they are different colours potentially meaning different material & one set came with the sliders, the other didn't. To say I was upset is a slight understatement, it's going back for the retest on the 12th so I have to get it sorted.

I really try not to go to main dealers, they are ridiculous in hourly rate and parts are marked up astronomically.
I try and do most of my stuff myself.

I been meaning to buy an all round diagnostic scanner which can do almost all functions.

I found a model of Autel that does full diagnostics, tpms and key coding.

I have plenty of friends who would buy me a drink or two to scan their vehicle when the check engine light comes on. Dealers are asking £100+ just to scan a car these days.
