Are we being forced to go electric?

Why road tax has never gone up for second hand vehicles so why should it now?

Fuel will still be same price as commercial vehicles will still use it!

Point 1 , what are you on about ?

Point 2 , are you telling me fuel prices don't increase ?

Fuel prices at the pump will rocket, "road tax" will rocket . This will be the sticks they use to drive ICE's for domestic use off the road.

not for a long time yet , if there are limited options for people then , we will just be paying more and maybe driving less . I guarantee though that tax will need to be generated and if it’s not fossil fuel, they are coming after the EVs!
Right now I’m not worried about any of that as by the time fuel is so expensive I’ll have my bus pass anyway ! Assuming that is what’s happens ! Next car will probably be another ICE one .

I think it'll take a decade before ICE cars will be effectively priced off the road. Twenty years and it'll be a rarity to see one and it'll be driven by someone with plenty of money for toys. In 30 years it will look stupid that we ever spewed out noxious fumes just to pop to the shops.

But by that time I still won't have ever owned a car

Fuel prices will rise either from the supply side or taxation. Taxation will be used (similar to cigarettes) to disincentivise use through price.

I am sure that we will move in the mid-future to a telemetrics monitoring of mileage and pay a taxation based on miles travelled.

Whilst these changes are not immediate, the more we can do to reduce our unnecessary travel and embrace the change, the better the reality will be!

I can't imagine the government letting the tax revenue from transport dwindle as ICE vehicles are replaced by EVs.

I'm sure plenty of options have been carefully studied.

POssibly some combination of:
1) road charging
2) "tax disc"
3) energy tax
4) other?

Road charging; will be interesting to see what happens if local congestion charges overlap with national charging schemes. Could get messy.

The tax "disc"; should apply to all vehicles, although always with a punitive addition for ICE emissions. Interesting to hear all the talk from
Germany of ICE cars being permitted for longer with 'carbon neutral' fuels. Carbon emissions are only one issue with ICEs.

Energy tax; I undersand that smart meters and smart chargers already allow EVs to charge at a different tariff to appliances in the rest of the property, so there's no reason why different VAT rates or even duty could be applied. Be interesting to see if charging from home-generated electricity would face the same tax/duty.

Meanwhile the skies look like this every day and industry continues to pollute…….but that brings the governments too much money to curtail, so keep hitting the poorer in the pocket.

I can't remember the last time I flew. 2018 maybe? I'm not planning on flying this year either.

I haven’t flown since 2010 ! I confess to one flight later this year but in the last 20 years we have flown three times in total !

I compare to my friend who had a house abroad and goes there at least 4 times a year!

The Stick will come in the form of clean air zones in and around towns and cities.

This will force drivers to park much further from their destination or not take their ICE at all.

We all know that drivers love convenience of parking next to the shops

I think I agree, but I wonder if our decision makers are ready to implement unpopular changes.
