Are we being forced to go electric?

But thats what we are being forced into buying.

Indeed or will be soon. I'm sure my next car will be electric but hopefully not for at least 5 years and hopefully then electric cars will be cheaper to buy (and will have 15+ year longevity without needing an expensive new battery before then).
I do under 5000 miles a year at present (and yes I do need a car for elderly parent caring duties which can be at very short notice) so I don't need £30k of metal sitting on the drive most of the time, I'd rather my 30k sits in the bank earning some interest!

I paid much less than that for my first house!

For most regular working people thirty grand is a bloody lot of money

We paid around half that for our first house, but that was over 40 years ago.

New cars have always been a bloody lot of money for most of us. I've been reasonably well off for a good many years now, but have never even considered buying a new car.

My petrol car is now 4.5 years old, should be good for another few years yet.
Would like an electric car next but not a huge one, maybe the VW I.D.2 when they come out in 2 or 3 years time.
Supposed to be 21k-ish and would be perfect for my lowly annual mileage...

The government are not forcing us to buy new cars.

The main car I own cost around the same as that one did when it was new, but I only paid around £8000 for it, four years ago (it was already 4 years old then).

New ICE Clio/Corsa etc about £18k. Electric version £10k premium. That will convert to used prices as a big premium to go green.

Prices have to come down
