Are we being forced to go electric?

With smart practical folk like this around then yes we should all be forced into EV

Real world, already commercial, no mess Australiians

Shocking that Australia requires to import 95% of their fossil fuels. They have so much sun and available land mass for solar and wind adoption

Same video was online in 2017, so not a lot of progress in the meantime it would appear.

90 seconds to swap the batteries. Somehow I don't think many could do it in that time.

🤦‍♂️ Really that is all you can say.

It must be a barrel of doom and gloom in Classic's household.

The repurposing of big trucks, the massive savings on running and not to mention endless servicing costs.

Most important ,zero tailpipe emissions.

Whether it's 1day or 5 years old, great achievement.

In the video they highlighted an automated battery swap procedure for the future.

I'm very impressed by their almost universal design/installation for large haulage

Nothing new under the sun, Fork lifts have had battery change over for decades, copy cat engineering at best.

Actually making batteries hot swappable out of cars would be the panacea , wouldn’t it ! The battery lifespan problem would be gone .

But this requires a common battery size, shape and capacity. Currently batteries are made to fit the car to make best use of available space. Furthermore, how many batteries are needed to have one in each car plus a stock of spares for refill? It may solve the charge time issue but makes the resource issue worse.

Nail on head figbat.

I worked in Motor Spares all my life and the constant changing of specs (in all parts not just batteries) made stocking a nightmare.

I have lost count of the amount of times I have been told by customers

"Why do you need the chassis number, they are all the same!"

There is a replacement battery system that does that commented on earlier in the thread but the issue is the need for common sizes, voltages, amperes etc. Sodium batteries being developed which are expected to supersede lithium and presumably a major cost saving.

Presently sodium does make for a cheaper battery, plentiful base ingredients. Not yet as efficient as lithium/cobalt batteries. Maybe the Tefals will combine to make a hybrid battery

You're not getting it.
Most people charge at home.
Charging away from home for a lot of people is very rare and with charger speed now it's just a coffee stop and you're good to go.
Swapping a battery out would hardly be much quicker and you'd need a lot more infrastructure and employees to do this. Much more expensive.

I've owned EVs for coming up 5 years now.

I've totalled my mileage from all the EVs we use over the period of ownership this come to 170,000 miles

Of the 5yrs (~1800 days) of ownership I've probably charged away from home 50 times which equates to less than 3% of our charging requirements.

So as @cougie uk said very rarely.

People worry about the time spent charging and how much longer it is than refuelling but every single charge I have done has been done whilst I am doing something else, so has actually added NO extra time to my day and didn’t need a detour to visit a special place to stand and watch as I refill.
