but wot about the children digging up the rare metals needed to build the accursed vehicles?

Aren't those same rare metals used in refining petrol too ? And they're in our bike lights, phones, laptops etc etc.

What a joke those scheme are…..one is an employer providing a bus themselves. The other two provide subsidised passes……but you have to have buses and trains available to use first.

For me to use a train for work, i would have to drive 4 miles or 8 miles to the two closest train stations.

The train 4 miles away goes in the opposite direction of where i work, the other train 8 miles away, would mean a further 3 mile walk after stopping at the closest station to where i work.

The car is king due to a total break down in infrastructure.

Also its easy to provide links to so called schemes, but are companies offering them, do companies even know about them in the first place……everyone knows about cycle2work.

But lets get back to your original comment

“ why should i subsidise your private car use”
…..well why should i subsidise people's, cycling, bus and train use???
That was never said by me. Please stop changing what was said to suit yourself.

Do you know that Cobalt, lithium are used in many other industries far more than electric car batteries. Cobalt is a major component in desulfurization of crude oil.

So unless folk are going to stop buying petrol, diesel right now, the argument is pointless, the morality aspect goes on both ICE and EVs

Yes it's not right that children or people should work in dangerous conditions, but you or I have very little influence over such situations. Governments will need to lobby. But you can't keep people from not wanting to be poor, so they will do anything to become wealthier.

Universities are full of virtue signallers - achieve nothing

I think for many people their choice of car reflects on their masculinity and an EV is in the camp . Chuckle

I challenged anyone doubting the benefits and performance of an EV to have a drive in one. They will blow you away.

The only other time I experienced such exhilaration from driving a car, was test drive of a Subaru Impreza turbo back in 1997. Rare iconic car at the time. Instantly handed over my deposit

An Ev is a bit like a dmu electric train -gets the job done without a fuss.

A ice car is like a diesel train type 43 or deltic gets it done with a bit if noise.

A V8 is like a steam train noise, smell and nostalgia!

We will soon be going to private roads to ride in a preserved vintage rs6 or M5!!🤣😭🤣😭

Re cost of purchase the alternative of leasing starts from around £230 a month for a Peugeot 208e judging from a Google search.
Yes the son just bought a 2020 Zoe with low mileage for about that. Looks a reasonable deal and he will save about 50% on his fuel costs according to his calculations. I’m looking forward to be able to give it a drive.

In the Times today theres an article about electric cars

In 2021 the Competition and Markets Authority said that the public charger network would need between 280,000 and 480,000 charger points by 2030 to meet the demand that will be created by the government’s ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars. The charging app Zap-Map said that there were 37,261 charging points in 22,049 locations last month — a 31 per cent increase over 12 months.”

I’ve driven one , can’t say I was blown away to be honest ? The future is electric so says the powers that be , however for some of us we will be dragged kicking and screaming  .

I haven't read the previous 217 pages, so forgive me if It's already been asked.......
How much extra cost/damage is likely to result from the weight of EV being much higher than ICE vehicles?

All the heavy vehicles around here are mercs and tractors, plus a few disco's. The teslas are smaller.

They're not much heavier than equivalent sized car

Tesla Model S 1950kg
BMW 750 2000kg

Tesla Model 3 LR 1730kg
BMW 335 1600kg

It's a common myth EVs weigh substantially more, which isn't the case. Yes a little bit, but no more the a large adult occupant

Nor is the tyre wear(another widely used anti EV myth)- I attribute this to the smoother power delivery of an EV .
