Still got the remnants of the lurgy, I did an 8k walk yesterday and felt ok. I will head for the local park and try a few laps walk run. Of interest is how many aches and niggles have resurfaced after a period of not running.

Don't know if it's an age thing. I know some people say time off is good and you come back refreshed with fresh legs but I agree with you, I just feel more achy and lethargic the longer I don't exercise.

The local photographer who took photos of last week’s half marathon has now shared them. He’s missed me again. Three events he’s covered and missed me in all. Am I just unlucky, or really that unphotegenic? 😂

I always look awful when running so am happy to avoid the photographers!

Some race photos can be flattering, but they tend to be the minority unless you're photogenic and the photographer catches you at the right moment. One of the guys I ran with was what's best described as a " slobberer ". At the end of a race his mouth would be surrounded by a sort of foamy spittle, much like an over exerted racehorse. It looked quite gross 😮

Couldn’t get my arse into gear this morning so missed Parkrun, did an interval run ( reverse pyramid) instead. Hard work but enjoyable nonetheless.

Our local Park ( Poole ) is quite large and has a fast course parkrun. We used to get 1000+ from time to time. The original course started with a lap of the cycle track which has been there since victorian times. It is exactly 1/3 of a mile. Almost every Wednesday evening in summer for what must be 30 years would see myself and a small group of running friends doing interval sessions and pyramids 1-2-3-2-1. This summer I thought to do a warm up down the park and out of curiosity I did a lap eyeballs out. I was significantly slower than my then recovery laps, but as I said to myself, I gave it a 100% effort then as now.
I used to like to mark my significant birthdays, those ending with a zero or a five, with some running eccentricity. On my 42nd birthday I thought about the meaning of life being 42, and that it was also the number of Km in a Marathon so I took the day off work and ran a marathon around the cycle track. A couple of the lads from work popped down on their lunch break and took a photo which I still have in a drawer somewhere.

I think I have a bit of a calf muscle tear, feels like the back of my right leg might explode when running. So does anyone have tips on how to mend it or atleast alleviate the pain?

I've done a Christmas day marathon the last couple years and want to do third and continue training for it but it's really slowing me down.

From personal experience on too many occasions:
Don't be tempted to try and stretch it. Put a heel lift such as Sorbothane or a piece of orthopaedic felt in your footwear on the affected side. Rest it for at least a week, when it starts to feel better it isn't it's still mending, give it at least another few days.
when you've done all that still don't stretch it, just remove the heel lift and that will be the equivalent of a gentle stretch.
This is in addition to the usual rest and ice. You can also find the tender spot and roll your fingers across the sore part, a bit like unwinding the twists on a piece of twine.
If you're going to do a Marathon on Christmas day then you are almost there with the training. I'd give the " sharpening up " short runs a miss, you are not going to lose all your fitness over the next three weeks, and you may well surprise yourself as to what a well rested body can pull out of the hat on the day.
Best wishes, and have a good one 👍
