I was told while travelling round New Zealand of the dark days of the fifties I think they said when a 'family-friendly' government had the genius idea of introducing a 6.30 last orders haven't you got homes to go to, with the inevitable result that every bar in the country post-work was crammed five deep with men drinking with both hands and no intention of sacrificing their place at the bar and so made copious use of the 'spitoons' provided. Before heading home to read bedtime stories to their kiddies no doubt...

When I was there outside of Auckland and Wellington the happy hours and closing times were much earlier than here.
My conclusion is that they simply operate an hour or two earlier than here. Tourist Information opening at 07:00 for example.

Recently I decided to watch the old Clint Eastwood westerns. I have both Netflix and Amazon prime. They want £6.99 to rent or buy them.
