It needs to be written down then read out. I got caught by someone giving it me and asking me to translate. I'd come with something like "on the water, it's the hour", a quite plausible naval motto, then realised I'd been had.

We tried it on a Frenchman once but it fell flat as I guess he wasn't familiar with Dick Emery's 70s sketch show
