Not a joke as such. This was posted on Nextdoor (a sort of local site for local news etc) :
Pretty sure I saw something happening in the Roundhay area the other day. Couldn't really work out what was going on. It might have been a squirrel moving about. It was quite far away. Anyway, it doesn't matter what it was, the point is WE NEED TO STAY VIGILANT.

Mmm, a mate of mine had the bent con-rod from when his Allegro's engine blew up. I assumed he'd got it as a souvenir from the garage, but he said "No, I picked it up out of the pool of oil left on the road". Evidently the piston had come off and smashed the cylinder head, then the loose con-rod bashed a hole in the side of the engine and took out the gearbox underneath. Presumably the crank broke too hence the rod ended up on the road

I can believe that, the bonnet on my Allegro opened up and wrapped around the windscreen at 70mph in the outside lane of a very busy M4 and another time the engine mounting sheared and the engine was left hanging on by a thread.

I was very young at the time and don't know the details of what happened but I remember a Leyland lorry my Dad drove lost a piston in action. Bit of a BL theme to this!

I was working with an International 784 tractor when under load, the engine developed a knock and split second later, put a connecting rod through the block but the piston stayed where it should. I know someone who had a Skoda Superb that did something similar.

A neighbour was changing the oil on a Lamborghini tractor and found a nut stuck to the magnetic sump bung. He dropped the sump to see where it had come from and discovered one of the big end caps was missing a nut and the other side was loose. A very close escape from an expensive problem!
