2024 Cycling miles.

I don't keep accurate records but probably just a little over 2,000 miles, nowhere near what I would normally hope for.

I had a few nice tours but I didn't manage many other long rides, most of my local rides have only been around 20 miles this year.

The year started with a bad back so my riding got off to a slow start this year. I did okay for a few months, including 450 miles on my Dumfries and Galloway tour in June.

It all tailed off after that. I am always busy in July as a volunteer for the local arts festival so never ride much in July. I worked a lot of overtime in August and September so didn't have as much time to ride as I would have liked, although I did manage to fit in very enjoyable long weekends in Connemara and Islay.

Then I had a bit of ill-fated romance in October and didn't have much time to ride

November and December, I have struggled for motivation, not helped by horrible weather.

Need to try harder next year!

I did walk a lot though as I start the day with a four mile walk.

Why is your Genesis not getting any use?

The wide pedal spacing of the MTB triple and wide, flat pedals on my Fuji have spoilt me. The last time I rode the Genesis, 12 miles on the skinny 105 cranks and unforgiving SPD pedals were enough to destroy my knees and hips.

On top of that the Fuji is the beast of burden and it seems I've only done about 300 leisure miles this year; and some of those involved locking the bike up which for me is a bridge too far with the Genesis.

I've been looking for a new crankset for the Genesis for ages now; problem is that thanks to Shimano's compatability perculiarities / their constant fashion-driven push away from anything I actually want to ride there are no ideal options..

Suffice to say... Fewer km than many riders on CycleChat, more km than some.

Near enough exactly my realistic target for the year; a big increase on a poor 2023. Next year's target is higher still.

Buy a generic crankset from Spa Cycles or SJS, or get a lightly used set of older cranks from ebay. 5 arm 110 compact has just about the best compatibility and longevity.

When I changed schools way back in 1967 we were introduced to the fantastically sensible SI units and never mentioned the very silly imperial units again.

2133, just shy of my record for a calendar year. Will take that, as I had 2 months off the bike in Jan and Feb, recovering from a shattered hand.

Also included my first 100 mile ride, as the main achievement of the year.

A full year of (at least) weekly drive-and-cycle commuting has worked wonders. 2,798km total, within touching distance of my record of 2,845km from back in 2016 when I cycle-commuted nearly every day from within London. This time around, it's been bolstered by semi-regular countryside jaunts of ~50km, which have also seen my Explorer square expand from 9x9 (when I first heard of the concept) to 18x18. Aiming to keep this up in 2025, maybe do my first Audax or similar, and hopefully break 3000km.
