Having a power meter on the Neo,, Bob you should be able to with a decent amount of accuracy, ride in the real world knowing what power your making by HR.

Dean, I have spent a lot of time researching the power pod and nearly got one. A lame reason i know but i just didnt want another thing hanging off my handlebar. Properly set up though they look more than good enough for most users. Pro bike and sigma often have it discounted to £220
but you cant use on the turbo !!
i have a powertap back wheel but to be honest there is more involved than first meets the eye - fine if everything is pan flat you know what you are capable of but keeping same watts downhill is hard also hills just get confusing . sorting zones out is fine but going up hill you would be going nowhere if you stayed in the medium zones ( although you could keep it up forever ) you find yourself ignoring data and riding a normal ride
i think they make more sense to me used on a turbo where its more controlled ( less complicated )
it is good though when you are in a headwind thinking i usually go faster along here but looking at watts you can see you are kicking out more even though slower

Berty I've got a book that I could recommend called 'training and racing with a power meter',which I'm finding really useful but a bit heavy going... It breaks everything down into different types of training and helps you understand how to analyse your efforts better. There's lots of different ways you can use power / the info it gives you and it's been an eye opener. It helps if you have software like 'goldencheetah'. It's free to install and is much more detailed than strava / garmin. It's all still very new to me but I'm really loving the power meter. Like you say. When you're battling against the wind and you look down at 350w or whatever it makes you feel better.

Hrm are really useful too. But I wouldn't substitute one for the other. Personally I find it easier to guesstimate power on the turbo than the real world where there's much more going on!

If you go up you must come down Newtons law
Ì've made a habit, that I'm currently trying to break, of using cars on hills. Both up amd down.

The unfortunate thing is most/all of my downhills are bkool videos. No IRL rides recently (last 30 yesrs) so I can get away with a lack of brake leavers. But maybe not for much longer.

Farrow&Ball lover, crap paint as well as expensive no coverage power, little green paint company is far better.
Didn't even need to Google those colours

I've just been in the Bkool thread and see that Bkool are bribing them with prizes to keep them playing that platform :giggle:

I love looking at new bikes, but having got one earlier in the year and a frame upgraded on my old bike, under warranty I not allowed anything. I think the next bike is an upgrade for my son, he currently rides a specialized Allez dsw smartweld custom build with 105. Tommy would like it, it's matte black and very stealth like even without deep section wheels. It's light for a aluminium frame, but thinking of getting him a sworks Tarmac frame if I can get one in the right size at the right price. Would probably stick ultegra on it, possibly di2.

That would be one lucky son. I won't be showing MY son this thread ^_^

So I had a report on last week's races, but it got eaten by the internet gremlins. I did a few races. I picked up a 1st and 3rd in the smaller, lower level of competition races last week. There were moments of interest, but I've lost them. I blame old age.

Nothing much to report on the Tues KISS race. I didn't look at the course before jumping in. So I wasn't aware we'd be climbing up box hill at the end of the race. As a result I think I went off too hard. I dIdn't have a good climb up the hill, but still placed ~10th of around 40 -- on a route with a climb that's good for me.

Thursday's KISS race was much more fun. 8 laps in the volcano and nearly 100 riders in total and again nearly 30 in the C group IIRC. Lots of opportunity for playing around. Given the relatively flat terrain I wanted to try and hold onto the fast C group. Thankfully it was a fast, but not insane start and our C group approached the volcano. On the first lap through we picked up a bunch of A group riders -- WTF, but OK. By the end of the 2nd lap we'd picked up a bunch of Bs. We were roughly 20 strong at that point. Everyone was quite sensible in realizing nobody was likely to get away from a group that big.

The group did eventually break in half, I think it was the climb from outside to inside the volcano. It just kind of happened and I was stuck with the slow group. I caught my breath a bit, looked at the w/kg of the tail of the faster group and figured it was worth a shot to try and catch them as they were only ~5 seconds ahead and going at a pace I could ride with and recover a bit if I could catch them. Delays would let them get further away and I figured I'd I need to catch them well ahead of that little climb again. So I jammed hard. Got reasonably close, let off slightly, then jammed again and was able to latch on. Spent the next couple laps just trying to catch my breath and hold on. Thankfully nobody hit the gas hard during that time or I would have been toast.

Our smaller, but faster group held together for the next 4 laps I think. We picked up a few folks along the way mostly spitting them out the back... I was mostly focused on trying to bring my HR down without getting spit out the back myself in preparation for the inevitable acceleration. It happened at the start of lap #7. Several riders hit the gas. I tried to go with them, but just didn't have enough in the tank. I was several seconds behind them and ahead of the rest of the shattered group. I let off a bit and picked up a companion. We actually worked reasonably well together for the remainder of the lap and were able to catch and drop a couple other C riders that had gone with the fast boys at the start of the lap, but couldn't keep up. I tried to drop my companion at the start of the final lap and thought I'd gotten away. I couldn't sustain the effort and he caught me with about a mile to go. We traded back and forth a bit and I dropped him for good on the final climb into the volcano. Ultimately I finished 5th of the herd of C riders. Very happy with that result. It was only after reviewing the race results that I realized my companion at the end was a lap behind.

Friday EVR was mostly a blur. Another mostly flat course and I was able to stick with a reasonably paced group, even taking a few pulls to encourage capture of various C group riders ahead. Unfortunately I started to cramp on the KOM and had to let my group go. Limped through the last 5 miles or so to an uneventful finish.

I'm slightly biased but it's an incredible frame it really is. And obviously a good upgrade fit wise from the Allez. Are you thinking new or second hand Kip? There's definitely a massive drop in price second hand so there are 'bargains' to be had. Brand new the sl5 is still the same price as when I bought my frame and it's rare they go below that, even with a new frame being released spesh are very controlling in that regard.

If you go ultegra I'd still get a dura ace or praxis chainset. It just doesn't look right with an ultegra one. Like Bob says, what a lucky son!
