If I can repeatedly surge and recover on the less steep bits I might just stay within reach and get back on to the pack on the descent

On the stage 5 TDZ climb I went up the drag at a nice steady even pace, another guy would pass me when the gradient lessened but drop behind again on the steeper bits , I did beat him to the top, but he spanked me the downhill. I didn't look but assumed he was heavier than my 70kg.

I can't remember the precise gradient where W/kg starts to lose out to pure Watts, it's not a high percentage something like 3%

A number of years ago, I was cycling on tour in the Alps. I was almost always at the back.

We arrived on a section of road for a mile or two and a woman rider remarked as I passed her.
"had I found my second wind".

I said "no, the gradient allows my power to beat your lightweight."

Normal service resumed shortly thereafter

I've downloaded and installed Sauce (dummy account etc). I can get i to work ... but ... i can't get it to overlay Zwift.

Zwift just opens as a window that is ONLY zwift and Sauce (like Chrome etc) are all hidden

Any ideas?

I've signed up to £2 per month, but may be overkill for me as it' really only the drafting I'm interested in (and maybe the ave watts per ride for the ego). Does it get confusing when racing having so much info on the screen?

You can't run Zwift in full screen mode if you want to use Sauce. You have to make it a window and then Sauce will be able to be overlaid

You can totally customise what you put on the screen. I don't look at draft almost at all during a race, but it's interesting when looking at video footage afterwards. Same for most of the other stuff, but some parts are useful during a race.

I open Zwift, then minimise it to launch Sauce. The re expand Zwift and Sauce is overlayed. I must have never used Zwift in full screen mode, probably back on the day when I used Trainer Road and Zwift together

I run Zwift on a Windows PC with its own monitor but I have a 42 inch TV connected, I have it set up as an extended screen, I have all Sauce info on the monitor, including map with profile, I have sauce messages on the main screen as you get to decide how long they display and the zwift messages are turned off (they overwrite the previous message making following the conversation impossible) I also have sauce nearby riders on the main screen, but sometimes minimise it as it contains a lot of info.

Ah, thanks guys. I probably have full screen mode set. I've been on ATV for years so forget some of the PC settings

Did the Worcester St. John's Reliability Ride today. 46 miles of fun

Quite pleased with my condition. Managed 2:15:04 for the 45.3 mile course and felt pretty strong especially towards the end.

The only downside was that I got a major speed wobble (tankslapper) on the fast (45mph) downhill. Bloody scary but I remembered the theory I learned when I raced motorbikes i.e. don't grip the bars hard, so I all but let go of them and let the bike sort itself out. Not much fun though.

Pure watts always wins. I.e a heavier rider doing the same w/kg as a ligher rider is faster on every terrain and gradient (obviously not taking into account drafting). It's just that the advantage of pure watts over w/kg gets smaller on steeper gradients, and it gets harder for a heavier rider to match the w/kg of a lighter rider on a long, steep climb. But if they did, they'd still be faster - https://zwiftinsider.com/wkg-tests/

Spotted Pete enjoying a bit of Portuguese sun too.

Apart from the flying, airports I'd like to be in the warm weather
Yeah, that was nice. As @Legs said, it was very hilly. Some gradients are crazy too - you do a hairpin and are faced with what looks like a wall made of tarmac - 25% ramps are a norm and you get the occasional 30%.

Landed back last Tuesday, did a test spin on Wednesday evening to see how i feel - all was fine, woke up Thursday morning to the worst viral infection in a long time. Wasn't even sure of I'll be able to get on a bike for the ZRL tomorrow but luckily things are on the mend. I'll likely be a shadow of my pre-holiday self
