Question for everyone who raced tonight , Why are starts so fast ?, The course has an obvious selection point the climb yet everyone races full gas too it . Would the results be much different if everyone cruised to the bottom then the race kicked off

I think it's a way too to put riders in the red and keep them there if they're not up to fitness. Had we started slow last night I'd have been fresh for the climb and would have made it over with the leaders, but because the race was frenetic and hard to the climb, I was already in the red so sure to be dropped. Took the sprint out of my legs too.

But first week on the bike after 7 months off I was not too bad ... if I keep at it I'll be able to hang on longer in future.

I found the course to be very unforgiving. There was no easy start, strong pace to the climb, climb obviously horrendous, but then it never really eased off either, had basically nothing for the sprint in the end

You did really well!

Final leg of Alex's Friday smash for January

A few more riders in the D cat. My nearest rival Steve was my main target. Easy roll out then the B kept the pace honest with periodic sprints to break the pack. I had planned to go long, which the pack had the same idea too. Long sprint came third in my category (D) and thankfully beat Steven, Phil helped by demoting Steve even further.
