Do you actually look at your HR when you ride or do you just feel toast and slow down, then look at it?
Just curious. I don't tend to look at mine at all until the videos afterwards. But my legs let me know when the system can't push any more by saying "you're 'avin a larf mate" and stopping doing what they're told.

I will occasionally have a power target for a specific segment or something, but most of the time I'm just trying to hold onto the b'strds in front.

On the topic of heart rate. Does anyone else's drop significantly when you burp? This is a serious question.

Yes I take notice of HR while I ride , I feel my breathing goes before my legs which seems to relate to HR , I seem to have a very narrow range which is optimal performance wise 160 to 165 is sustainable but over 165 to 170 is right on the edge of blowing

I sometimes burp in my videos. I'll have to look out for that one. Not noticed it.
Is it a momentary thing or does it last for a little while?
(Just wondering if it could be used deliberately. HR getting too high? Burp a few times. ^_^ )

I’m like this too - my HR / breathing goes pop before my legs ever do! This is not only on Zwift, but IRL too, especially on longer, steep climbs.

So after a hard sprint when you have maxed your HR out neck some soda water, burp then sprint on! Who needs EPO? Might email Brailsford now!

Next Tuesdays ZRL could be interesting... 🤣

Yes, mine does that too. 3 -5 BPM directly after. Weird physical response.

Runs off to search the internet

Pete, seems we are not alone

Good find, Andy. Yeah, in my case it's about 10BPM less for maybe 15 seconds. Especially well noticeable during Z2 rides, where my HR doesn't vary too much.

I tried doing it on demand but doesn't seem to work. Maybe there needs to be an element of surprise.

I know this is all a bit tongue in cheek but would it actually be helping though? I mean your HR is high for a reason - to pump all that oxygenated blood your muscles are demanding, so your HR going down temporarily is surely reducing that oxygen to your muscles slightly and therefore harming your performance not helping. Your heart's not going to temporarily and instanstly become stronger for a few seconds is it, so you have the same heart muscle doing less work for a few seconds surely?

Don't think I've ever burped while racing on Zwift so I have no personal experience to add ^_^

Its a thing!

Belching as a rare cause of sudden and short-lived heart rate decrease during exercise

"This case clearly illustrates that short-lived HR deceleration during exercise could not only be due to myocardial ischemia but also to digestive symptoms. Physicians should consider belching as a possible differential diagnosis when detected this HR abnormality."

A Vagal response apparently , as is...farting!

edit:didnt see Andy's post
