My best power came after loads of Z2

As I think you know, I've been piling the Z2 rides in for a few weeks with very little intensity. I surprised myself a bit in the ZRL on Tuesday when I did my 3rd highest av power in 2023 which seems to suggest the Z2 is having an effect.

Similar effect to the Maffetone method lots of runners use. Seems crazy slow to start with as you have to go so slow to stay at the correct heart rate, but if you persevere you start to see the benefits after several weeks.
Spot on. My 'method' for the past two years was to smash it twice a week and do the rest in Z2. Works wonders. And then occasionally race the FRR tours to show the legs who's boss ;)

So doing FRR in Z2 just means there will be a bit more of it than usual. The current tour is quite friendly for that - stages not too long or too hilly.

I prefer my z2 outside and this year hasn't really been conducive to that. So I've probably done less z2 than usual.
I've raced a lot though. I expect it has hampered my "long power" improvement though. There has been a bit, but really very little.

Need to either stop being a woos and get outside or find a way to make 2hr rides indoors more palatable.

I've personally have no real structure or aims to excel to be my best form. I'm quite content with being near the front in C on flatish events. It keeps me fit. I do have periods where I try to get some regular Z2 but life gets in the way for being in a solid routine.

So it's smash it when I can and get some weight training in-between

Stage 1 Frr done , 48km arounds New York , lumpy always up or down , 138th in mixed B cat waiting results on website for specific cat , Gave it a good go without going mad average 2.6w/kg ,pacing myself , saw J.Constable in the start pen . Spent the 1st 10km trying to drop a wheel sucker called S.Robinson who was very unchatty . Dropped him only for him to come back and put a minute into up the NY kom that's when I realised it wasn't our S.Robinson 👍

Finished 163rd, 188 starters, 173 finishers. About 7 ½ minutes down on Phil at 2.2W/Kg. S.Robinson also passed me early on. Going to try as many stages as I can until I blow up!

Nothing wrong with that if it fits your life.

I've had a lot of fun racing and it does help to keep things going, but I do feel the need for some zone 2 in my life now.

If 27km is accurate, then that's the lead-in out of the city, then 5 times up the North Sgurr (gravel, longer), 4 times up the South Sgurr (tarmac, shorter) and then the finish would be about halfway down the descent of the South side. I'd presume they'll be ending it at the top and it's just a rounding error.
