Tough night with the TTT last night for the Splitters B team. Firstly @Ketty had to drop out for essential family duties so we were down to 5, and then @Norry1 had technical issues with Zwift and couldn't join the pen - just down to the bare minimum of 4 then

We gave it our best shot despite the setbacks though. @Peter Salt did some monster turns, @Rich A did some early turns too and @mjd1988 was instructed to save himself for the final hill - if you can call hanging on to Peter's wheel "saving yourself" in any way - I think Rich and Michael might disagree! I probably had the easiest time of the 4 of us because Peter seemed so happy just to sit at the front drilling out 4.5w/kg for ever so I let him get on with it mostly :music:- I almost had to bully him off the front so I could do a little bit of the work once or twice!

Anyway, we kept it together as a team which was the most important thing obviously and came 12th on the night in our league (everyone ahead of us was a team of 6). Great work guys :highfive:. Video of all the "fun" below

Been using Zwift for a few months but never raced. Tonight I decided to give it a bash and entered the Masters SA race over 60's category. Bloody hell was it hard, went off the start line hard and ended up in a group quite far up to the front but realised I had blown the doors off so slowly dropped down the groups until I was in the last but one group which was mainly over 50's but thought thats no disgrace. With a mile to go I had to let the elastic snap but the group behind were over a minute behind so they would never catch me.
Surprised at quite a poor result 18th out of 21. Even more suprised at the over 60s winners stats 4.4 w/kg avg heart rate 50 max heart rate 138. 2nd guy also 4.4 w/kg but a more believable avg 140 max 168. I manged 2.6w/kg avg got beaten by some over 70's as well half of them seem to be avg over 3.0 w/kg.
Dont know if I'll bother again till I drop a ton of weight, I am right at the bottom of a normal group C as ftp over 2.5 so know I would only come last in one of those.

Zwift racing is all about being able to save energy by drafting this takes practice , Yes it's hard to start with just stick at it and it will start to click when to invest energy and when to save it

If I do do it again yes I'll try not to go to hard at the start , but I did spend a good time in the group I ended up in and never stuck my nose in the wind in that group or any of the others I did .I Just have to realise Zwift is world wide and not just Essex ( I have raced real life and not done too bad age group wise) but everyone else despite being old codgers seem to be mostly doing over 3.0 w/kg avg. To make that I would have to drop 7 kilos over a stone. I am overweight by easily 1.5 stone compared to my old racing weight so do-able. I refuse to cheat on declared weight so more dieting is required. I dont think I can gain power as been around this power output for years.

Zwift racing is hard, especially the start. From what you describe you entered a multi category race where all the cats were together. 4.4W/kg is A category.

Choose C cat races only. Again these can be very tough especially if there are many younger high C cat riders taking part.

Keep racing and you will improve, through fitness and race craft. Yes it's quite important to know the tactics on Zwift and be familiar with the course you're competing on

Good luck

Hi Harry. I did that race (60+) 4 weeks ago and it was a toughie. There were a couple of riders with w/kg that are hard to believe at our age but I think most are legit.

Weight is a major factor though in Zwift.

Do you do Master's racing outdoors?

Well done, they are bloody tough and the first one will always be the worst.

Racing by age alone you could be against cat A's so probably best to do a category enforcement race - if you sign up to zwiftpower itll help assign you and they retrospectively remove all the silly results from miscalibrated trainers /35kg 6"8 rugby players. With time you get used to the drafting etc which makes a big difference. Or you can just join the occasion race without all the faff as well that's the beauty of it

Exactly this. Too many people are overly hung up on w/kg (Zwift's fault).
Whilst in Zwift, w/kg does seem to matter a bit more than in real life, it is still true that as a 67kg rider, if I'm riding with 85kg riders I will have to put our more w/kg than them just to keep up. I get my revenge on the punchy climbs though.

@HarryTheDog, I'd echo the opinion of an age-based race being tough - you'll get a right mix of people, from weekend warriors all the way to proper masters racers.

I understand if you're at the end of Zwift 'C' it may be a bit disheartening to hang at the back. On the other hand, you may find that motivating.
