This segment racing just seems alien to me - am I right in thinking that if I blitz round a course at full tilt I will be beaten on points by someone just trying on segments ?
In this case: No.

These are additional FAL points and not FTS. So if your blitzing around, you'll also be 1st across all segments, in practice actually increasing your winning margin.

What they're trying to achieve is to have a more inclusive event for everyone.

They probably think that the category limits are too wide, so are making mini categories within each main cat.

I know that once dropped from the main pack I would back off and cruise around till the final finish sprint.

Now riders can gain meaningful points for their team by contesting sprints and prime's competing against those in their own mini league and then go for the sprint finish.

Finishing positions is one set of points. Where as FAL (Fastest across line in a segment), and FTS (Fastest though a segment) can equate to many segments so many more point scoring opportunities.

So in the racing league you get people just targeting segments. Sometimes they drop off the back of the group internationally, to save energy for the segment(s) they’re targeting. This has been exaggerated to the point they might finish the race minutes after everyone else. Or wait to be lapped so they can attack a segment in the draft.

In our case last winter we weren’t the strongest team on paper. So we had a sprinting team specifically attacking segment rather than the finish. We nearly won the league off the back of the tactic. But if I’m honest I find it a bit odd…

Having said that, because it allows more people to have a chance of contributing it has mass appeal. Historically sprinters would be sprinting for the line at the end. Now you can sprint for the first segment, maybe a couple of minutes into the race, get a load of points, and then spin around the rest of the course calling yourself Chris hoy to pass the time! And then get more points than someone who stays the course until the end.

The grand tours now include more intermediate sprints to keep the riders more engaged on each stage

I think it’s more likely it’s to keep the viewers engaged and the race more varied isn’t it?

But the races are run very differently aren’t they. Grand tour stages being much longer with less segments than your average 20km zwift race! Also on grand tours sprinters don’t share their points amongst the team to get a green jersey. It’s individual competition. Ie they can’t just compete one sprint and job done. Also the points aren’t as skewed. I could carry on!

You do get sprinters leaving the tour once all the flat stages have gone. The only ones who stay are those contesting the green jersey.

Zwift racing is a particular platform like say 20-20 cricket is to Test match cricket.

It's not a bad thing that the lower capable category rider can have a full on race with similarly abled riders right to the end.

I didn’t say it is a bad thing Andy. I just described it.

But it’s nothing like a grand tour stage…

It’s not a full on race between the best and the worst either is it. It’s more like a feather weight fighter climbing into the ring, slapping a heavy weight fighter in the face to grab a point. And then running out of the ring again.

I can see why it has mass appeal. I can also see why that’s unappealing to others.

On a side note I can see why the format helps to encourage people to intentionally avoid promotion.

Martini’s are traditionally made with Gin and vermouth.

This is made with vodka and (espresso) coffee.

I’m not sure I can trust a man who doesn’t like vodka or coffee!
Haha, why is it called martini then? Is this like tinfoil that's actually aluminium?

I do get my caffeine from chocolate!

And I do like a bit of vodka if you have a sour cucumber to go with it ^_^
